6 Of The Best Things To Do In Hanoi, Vietnam

6 Of The Best Things To Do In Hanoi, Vietnam

Situated in northern Vietnam, Hanoi is not only the capital but also one of the oldest cities in Southeast Asia. Known for its bustling markets and vibrant street life, Hanoi offers a diversity of Vietnam’s rich heritage and dynamic presence. Since I recommend spending a minimum of 2 full days in the city, here are the best activities to do while you’re there:

  1. Old Quarter
  2. Hanoi Train Street
  3. Ha Long Bay
  4. Dong Xuan Market
  5. Visit Hoan Kiem Lake
  6. Ngoc Son Temple

Old Quarter

The Old Quarter is one of the city’s most iconic and vibrant neighborhoods. Most activities are in this quarter. Be ready because the narrow streets are like a labyrinth filled with bustling markets, street vendors, and shops selling everything from silk garments to souvenirs. It’s a must-visit for everyone seeking the essence of Hanoi’s culture, history, and everyday life.

Here are 2 important streets:

  • Hang Gai Street: known for its silk products
  • Hang Bac Street: famous for its jewelry shops

Hanoi Train Street

One activity you must not miss when visiting the city is Hanoi Train Street. As you can see in the video, a train passes so close to you while you enjoy a drink in a restaurant/café. It’s such a nice and different activity! But, be ready because the train passes only twice daily: 3 pm and 7 pm. The location of the train street is in the Old Quarter. Just look up Hanoi Train Street on Google Maps and you will find the place.

*During the day, locals control the street. You cannot stay in the street if you don’t sit in a café and drink something*

Ha Long Bay – Day Trip

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northeastern Vietnam. There’s a reason it’s one of the country’s most iconic natural attractions. Hạ Long Bay is renowned for its breathtaking scenery of emerald-green waters dotted with 1,600 limestone islands that are unlike anywhere else on Earth.

You can explore Ha Long Bay on a day trip from Hanoi. Your day will depend on the company you choose. Most likely, you will either watch the sunrise or the sunset, stop at Ti Top Island (pristine sandy beaches), explore Sung Sot Cave (stunning stalactites and stalagmites), and/or do some kayaking while watching monkeys.

It’s important to ask the company while booking what their activities are. You can either book online or through your hotel/hostel. We booked through our hotel, JW Marriott Hotel, for 3 people. We spent our day on a catamaran, all of your meals except for breakfast were included as well as the transportation from the hotel.

Dong Xuan Market

Dong Xuan Market is one of Hanoi’s largest and oldest indoor markets. The market offers various goods ranging from clothing, souvenirs, local street food, and so much more. My favorite silk top is from this market, so keep your eyes open to find some awesome gems!

Since it’s such a popular spot for tourists and locals, bargaining is common practice. Be prepared to haggle for the best prices. The trick is to ask a couple of shops for their price and find the best one. They know you will negotiate, so they will tell you a ridiculous price for everything. The best way to react is to laugh (with them, not of them) and tell them a way smaller price. You will together find a price in the middle of it all.

Visit Hoan Kiem Lake

Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake, is a scenic lake. It’s one of the most iconic landmarks in the city and holds significant cultural and historical importance to the Vietnamese people. Located in the center of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, it’s a must-see for its tranquil waters, lush greenery, and charming bridges. It’s also a great gathering for locals and tourists.

Ngoc Son Temple

Ngoc Son Temple, also known as the Temple of the Jade Mountain, is located on a small island on the Hoan Kiem Lake. The temple is connected to the mainland by the red-painted Huc Bridge

It’s a popular activity for locals and tourists because of its religious and architectural importance. If you want to pay your respects, offer prayers, or simply admire this landmark, this activity is for you!

The ticket is free for children under 15 years old, 15.000 VND (0.8$ CAD) for students and 30.000 (1.65$ CAD) for adults.
