How Should I Choose my Hostel?

This is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, which is why I’ve dedicated an entire article to help you pick the right hostel. After reading this article, be sure to check out 10 Essential Tips for Choosing the Perfect Hostel.

How Do I Book my Hostel?

There are several platforms where you can book hostels, including Booking, Hostelworld, and Agoda. I prefer Hostelworld because it offers a great selection of hostels with a detailed rating system that helps you make an informed choice. The app also includes group chats where you can connect with people who will be staying at the same place as you.

3

Do I Need to Book my Hostel in Advance?

It’s a good idea to book your hostel in advance, especially if you’re traveling during a busy period or a special event in the area. You should also check how many hostels are available in the region you’re visiting. Some places, like small islands, might have only a few hostels that fill up quickly. Although, sometimes booking at the last minute gives you better prices.

My preference: I personally never book in advance unless it’s a destination with not many hostel options. This allows me to hear recommendations, extend my stay at a place I really love, or even stay flexible if I meet friends I would like to follow on their journey.

What Essentials Should I Pack For my Hostel Stay?

Here are a few must-haves:

  • Padlocks for lockers to keep your belongings safe
  • A lightweight microfiber towel, which is compact and dries quickly—perfect for traveling
  • Flip-flops to wear in the showers, as many people use the same facilities
  • Earplugs and a sleeping mask if you’re a light sleeper. Even if you’re not sensitive to noise or light, these items can be lifesavers in a shared space
  • Carabiners to clip items to your bed for easy access

5

 Are Hostels Safe?

I’ve never felt unsafe in a hostel, but like any public space, there’s always a potential risk. It’s important to stay aware and take precautions, such as using lockers for your valuables. While you’re sharing space with strangers, the communal nature of hostels often provides a level of security, as there are usually others around.

For the girls: For extra safety/ease, you can always book a female dorm only! Sometimes it’s a little extra but nothing big compared to the comfort it can bring you.

6

What Happens If I Arrive Late at my Hostel?

If you’re going to arrive late, contact the hostel to let them know your estimated arrival time. Most of the time, this won’t be a problem, and they’ll ensure someone is available to check you in. If the hostel has strict lobby hours, this information should be listed on the booking website. If this is a concern, consider booking a hostel with 24-hour reception.

7

Do Hostels Provide Bedding?

Yes, hostels always provide bedding, including sheets and blankets. However, they might ask you to strip the bed and bring the linens downstairs when you check out. If you’re sensitive to cold, consider bringing a sleeping bag, as the blankets provided might not be very warm, and some guests may turn the AC to the maximum setting.

8

Do Hostels Provide Towels?

Not always. This is why bringing a microfiber towel is essential. Some hostels offer towels for free, while others may charge a fee or require a deposit. Free towel in a hostel is a small luxury.

9

What Is it Like Staying in a Hostel?

Staying in a hostel can feel strange at first. You’ll be sleeping in a large room full of bunk beds, often next to strangers. We recommend choosing hostels with bed curtains for added privacy. To enjoy the hostel experience, you need to be prepared to give up some privacy, as you’ll be sharing showers and bathrooms that may be mixed-gender or gender-separated. Despite these conditions, staying in a hostel is an incredible experience and a great way to meet people while traveling.

10

Is There a Kitchen in Hostels?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no—every hostel is different. In Europe, around 90% of hostels have a kitchen. In Asia, however, about 90% of hostels don’t have kitchens because restaurant food is often very cheap. Check the hostel’s website or photos in advance to see if there’s a kitchen, so you can plan accordingly.

11

Top Bunk vs. Bottom Bunk

Everyone has a preference! I prefer the bottom bunk because it’s more convenient—I don’t have to climb down a ladder every time, especially when it’s dark in the room. I also like being able to sit on my bed easily. Others prefer the top bunk for the added privacy, as it can feel less accessible to others in the room. Keep in mind that you might not always have a choice in dorm rooms, but it’s good to know your preference for when you do.

12

Are Hostels Expensive?

Hostels are generally the cheapest accommodation option when traveling. However, prices can vary widely depending on the country. For example, in some places, a hostel might cost $5 per night while a hotel costs $40. In more expensive locations, a hostel could be $100 per night, while hotels might be $400-$500 per night.

13

Are There Age Limits for Hostels?

Most hostels don’t have strict age policies, but some do have minimum age requirements, usually 18 years old. It’s rare to see people over 30 in dorm rooms, and honestly, it can feel a bit awkward sharing a room with someone significantly older. If you’re an older adult, I recommend booking a private room within the hostel, which is more expensive than a dorm bed but still cheaper than a hotel.

14

Is it Okay to Have Sex in a Hostel?

No. Please be respectful and book a private room if you’re with a partner. You can be kicked out of the hostel if you’re caught. I’ve seen it happen, and it was pretty disturbing—especially being so close that I could have touched the person’s little booty if I’d reached out my hand.

What Can I Learn From Living the Hostel Life?

Living in a hostel teaches you to be patient, resourceful, and sociable. You’ll meet a lot of people—some you’ll have fun with, while others might test your patience due to differing values. The only thing you can fully control in a hostel is yourself and your budget. You’ll learn to be resourceful when things don’t go as planned and to be independent in managing your travels.
