4 Of the Best Things to Do in Procida, Italy

Procida is a charming island off the coast of southern Italy, making it an ideal day trip from Naples and a great alternative to Capri if you’re short on time or budget.

With roots dating back to ancient Greek and Roman times, Procida is one of the oldest islands in the Bay of Naples. It served as a key maritime outpost throughout history, and its architecture and traditions have been shaped by various cultures, including the Normans and Aragonese, giving the island a unique character.

Here are four of the best activities to enjoy on the island, along with tips on getting around to help you plan your day:

  1. Walk Through the Streets Near the Marina
  2. Terra Murata: The Best Viewpoint on the Island
  3. Enjoy the Beach
  4. Visit Palazzo d’Avalos

1

Walk Through the Streets Near the Marina

Upon arriving at Procida’s only terminal, Terminal Navi Procida, take some time to explore the vibrant streets near Marina di Procida. This picturesque harbor is known for its colorful pastel houses and lively atmosphere, with narrow streets perfect for a leisurely stroll. As you wander, you’ll enjoy charming views of fishing boats and local life. Don’t miss the chance to try some lemon slush or gelato, as Procida is famous for its lemon groves.

2

Terra Murata: The Best Viewpoint on the Island

Terra Murata, just a 15-minute walk from Marina di Procida, is the highest point on the island and offers stunning panoramic views of the marina and the island’s colorful houses. Originally built in the 16th century as a fortified refuge against pirate attacks, this historic site requires a bit of a climb to reach, but the breathtaking scenery makes it well worth the effort.

I recommend going as soon as possible after your arrival on the island—the viewpoint will be less crowded in the morning, giving you the perfect opportunity to take amazing pictures.

Enjoy the Beach

Relaxing on the beach in Procida is a must. The crystal-clear water is perfect for a refreshing swim while soaking up the sun. I visited in June and found the beaches pleasantly uncrowded. My favorite time to enjoy the sand between my toes is in the afternoon when the sun is at its hottest, making it a perfect way to finish the day.

I spent my afternoon at Spiaggia della Chiaia, a beautiful spot to unwind.

Spiaggia di Ciraccio and Spiaggia di Pozzo Vecchio are also popular beaches where you can enjoy the clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Both spots offer a more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for swimming and soaking up the sun.

Visit Palazzo d’Avalos

Don’t miss a visit to the abandoned Palazzo d’Avalos, a former palace turned into a prison until 1988.. Located in Terra Murata, this fascinating site provides a haunting glimpse into the island’s past and is an interesting stop for those interested in history.

The palace is not open to the public on a regular basis, so to visit, you’ll need to book a guided tour at least 2 days in advance. The tour costs between 10 and 15 euros (15-22$ CAD), depending on the company you choose, and lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours.

How to Get Around the Island

By Foot
Procida is a small island, making it easy and enjoyable to explore on foot. The narrow streets, especially around the marina and in the old town areas, are perfect for walking. I discovered hidden gems and easily reached most of the island’s main attractions this way. If you’re in good physical shape and enjoy walking, this is definitely the option I recommend.

By Bicycle
Bicycles are also a great way to get around Procida, offering a faster alternative to walking while still allowing you to enjoy the scenic views. Keep in mind that some areas can be a bit hilly, so be prepared for a workout!

Several rental shops on the island offer bikes for 10 to 15 euros (15-22$ CAD) per day, depending on the type of bike and the rental shop. A popular option is Procida Bike Rental near the marina. I recommend booking in advance through the rental shops’ websites to ensure availability, especially during the high season.

By Car
Driving on Procida can be challenging due to the narrow streets and limited parking. I don’t recommend this option, particularly because the older parts of the island have very tight roads. Additionally, it’s a costly choice for a single-day visit.

By Public Transportation
Procida has a small public bus system that connects the main parts of the island. It’s convenient for reaching places that are a bit farther away, like some of the more remote beaches or Terra Murata. Tickets can be purchased directly on the bus. The buses run fairly frequently, especially during the tourist season, but walking or renting a bike is often more efficient and enjoyable.
