Top Destinations in Greece: Amazing Places to Stay and Explore

When you think of Greece, the iconic blue and white streets of Mykonos or Santorini likely come to mind. These islands are famous, but did you know that Greece has over 2,000 islands? Crazy right! Despite this, the same few tend to steal the spotlight. That’s why I decided to experience Greece differently from most tourists.

Instead of following the usual route, I chose a less mainstream duo for my itinerary: a city and an island that offer something unique. For the city, I couldn’t resist Athens—a name we all recognize from school, movies, or books, with its ancient ruins, vibrant neighborhoods, and rich historical significance. For the island, I picked Kefalonia, a hidden gem I stumbled upon while searching for accommodations in Greece. As I dug deeper, I discovered that Kefalonia is relatively unknown, which means lower prices and a more authentic Greek experience compared to the more popular islands. I decided to take the leap and visit, drawn by its stunning natural landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and serene beaches.

I have no regrets about my choice. I absolutely loved my time in both Athens and Kefalonia, from exploring the lively streets of Athens to relaxing on Kefalonia’s untouched shores. I’m excited to share my insights with you so, here’s a closer look at these two great destinations:

1

Athens

Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, is a treasure trove of history and culture, known as the birthplace of democracy.

  • Airport Access: Most international travelers will land at Athens International Airport, the largest in the country.
  • Must-See Sites: The Acropolis of Athens and the Ancient Agora are must-visits for history lovers.
  • Beach Access: If you’re short on time, Athens offers some great beaches, so you don’t have to miss out on the sun and sea.
  • Nightlife: Whether you’re in the mood to party at a club, meet new friends in Monastiraki, or enjoy a family night out at Little Kook café, Athens has something for everyone.
  • Monastiraki: This lively flea market is worth exploring both during the day and at night.
  • Historical Significance: As Europe’s oldest capital, Athens is rich in history, with countless stories to tell.

Best Time to Visit: November to March (for fewer crowds and lower prices) or April to October (for warmer weather and open attractions).

How to Get There: Athens is accessible through Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos). You can take the metro, bus, or taxis to the city center.

Where to Stay: Athens offers a wide range of accommodations, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious hotels. Staying in neighborhoods like Plaka or Monastiraki provides easy access to major attractions like the Acropolis and Parthenon.

2

Kefalonia

Kefalonia, also known as Cephalonia, is the sixth-largest island in Greece, yet it remains a hidden gem for many travelers.

  • Fewer Tourists: Being less known means you’ll enjoy quieter beaches, restaurants, and town centers—perfect for a peaceful getaway even during the summer.
  • Getting Around: Renting a scooter is the best way to explore Kefalonia. It’s an exhilarating way to experience the island, and some of my best memories are from riding around on a scooter.
  • Natural Beauty: Kefalonia offers a stunning mix of landscapes, from towering mountains to pristine beaches.

Best Time to Visit: May to September (for warm weather).

How to Get There: Kefalonia is accessible through Kefalonia International Airport (EFL), with flights from Athens and other European destinations. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Athens to Patras and then a ferry from Patras to Sami. Booking through the Kefalonian Buses S.A. website is the easiest way to arrange this.

Where to Stay: Kefalonia offers a variety of accommodations, from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxury hotels. Staying in areas like Argostoli or Lixouri provides easy access to popular attractions and restaurants. For a quieter experience, consider staying in Assos or Fiskardo.

Budget Tip: Exploring local tavernas is a great way to enjoy affordable, authentic Greek meals.
