Berat is often regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Albania. Known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 due to its well-preserved Ottoman-era architecture and cultural significance. The city’s distinctive white-washed houses with large windows create a mesmerizing view, especially when seen from the Osum River. Berat is also famous for its rich history, with roots dating back to ancient Illyria, offering visitors a glimpse into Albania’s past through its landmarks and museums. Beyond its architectural beauty, Berat is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, including hills and vineyards, making it a perfect destination for those who enjoy scenic views and outdoor exploration.

Explore Berat Castle
If you have time for just one activity in Berat, make it a visit to Kalaja e Beratit. This impressive 13th-century castle-fortress overlooks the town and offers breathtaking views, showcasing the unique landscapes of the Balkans that are unlike anywhere else in Europe. Exploring the extensive fortress can take 2-3 hours at a leisurely pace, allowing you to fully appreciate its historical and architectural significance.
The castle played a crucial role in defending Berat against various invasions, including those by Ottoman forces. Notable figures, such as the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, are associated with its history, as he fortified the castle during his reign to strengthen the city’s defenses.
Price: Free between 6:00 PM and 9:00 AM; 300 LEK (4$ CAD) from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy the views without the crowds.
How to Get There: You can reach the fortress on foot from the town center in about 25 minutes, though the walk is uphill since the castle is perched on a hill.

Wander Through the Old Town
Berat, often called the “City of a Thousand Windows,” offers a truly enchanting experience as you explore its old town. The cobbled streets, adorned with traditional white houses, historical churches, and a variety of restaurants and boutiques, create an atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time.
This nickname comes to life as you wander through the old town, where the blend of Byzantine and Ottoman architectural styles is prominently displayed. The historical white houses and ancient churches are vivid reminders of Berat’s rich past, making the city a must-see for those interested in history and culture.
To explore the old town, you can cross either the Ura e Goricës (Gorica Bridge) or the New Bridge of Berat. Near the New Bridge, on Shetitorja Osumi street, you’ll find the most popular spot to photograph the old town—the 1001 Windows Viewpoint. You can easily locate it using Google Maps.

Stroll Along Bulevardi Republika
This is a simple yet enjoyable activity—taking a leisurely walk along Republika Boulevard. When I visited in June, the boulevard was lively, with shops and restaurants open both day and night, creating a vibrant atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed strolling here in the evenings. Walking along this boulevard offers a great way to experience the everyday life of Albanians and immerse yourself in the local culture.

Join a Free Walking Tour
Although I didn’t have time to take a free walking tour in Berat, it came highly recommended by others. While I don’t have a specific company to recommend, most hostels and hotels offer free walking tour options at their reception. I also noticed several stands promoting these tours in the center of Berat.
A free walking tour is a fantastic way to learn more about the city’s history and Albania as a whole. Tours typically last around 1-2 hours. However, it’s important to note that while the tour itself is free, tips for the guide are appreciated, as this is their livelihood.
Tips: Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water, especially during the summer months.
