As the capital of Albania, Tirana is a city that offers a unique blend of culture, tradition, and modern charm. While it may have a different atmosphere compared to other Albanian cities, this distinct character is part of what makes Tirana so intriguing. With its rich historical background and vibrant local life, it’s definitely worth exploring. Here are seven of the best activities to experience in Tirana:

- Discover the National History Museum (Muzeu Historik Kombëtar)
- Admire Et`hem Bey Mosque
- Climb the Pyramid of Tirana
- Stop by Saint Paul Cathedral (Katedralja e Shën Palit)

Take a Free Walking Tour
I started my first day in Tirana with a free walking tour, and it turned out to be the best decision ever. My guide not only recommended but also showed us all the other activities I mentioned in this article.
Beyond that, I learned so much about the country’s history. Did you know that Albania’s borders were almost completely closed to the world from 1975 to 1991? During that time, it was the most isolated country in the world. Another interesting fact is that Mercedes-Benz is the car of choice in Albania.
I picked up so many intriguing insights during the tour that I can’t stress enough—you must do a free walking tour when you’re in Tirana.
Price: While the activity is free, tips are highly appreciated as they contribute directly to the guides’ income.
How to Book: I booked my tour through the website GuruWalk. There are several options available, depending on how you want to spend your day. Most tours last around 2 to 2.5 hours and typically start in Skanderbeg Square.
Best Time to Do This Activity: Morning tours are recommended to avoid the midday heat.
2
Explore Skanderbeg Square
Skanderbeg Square is the heart of the city, bustling with activity. At the center of the square stands a statue of Skanderbeg on horseback, commemorating Albania’s national hero. Skanderbeg led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, making him a pivotal figure in Albania’s history and culture.
The square is a great spot to soak up the sun, relax, and enjoy some time with friends. It’s definitely worth a quick visit, especially since the next two activities are located nearby.
Tip: The square is also beautifully lit at night, making for a pleasant evening stroll.

Visit BunkArt 1
Tirana is home to two BunkArt museums, but if you only have time for one, make it BunkArt 1. This museum is housed in an anti-atomic bunker and offers a fascinating look at Albania’s communist past, particularly its military history.
Entrance Fee: 500L (7$ CAD).
Opening Hours: 9 AM – 4 PM daily.
Location: Rruga Fadil Deliu, Tirana.
Best Time to Visit: Early morning to avoid the crowds.
Tips: Plan to spend 2 hours here. The bunker can be chilly, so bring a light jacket.

Discover the National History Museum (Muzeu Historik Kombëtar)
Although I didn’t have time to visit this museum, it came highly recommended by my guide, which is why I think it’s a great activity if you can fit it into your itinerary. The museum is an excellent place to learn more about Albania’s history.
Entrance Fee: 500L (7$ CAD).
Opening Hours: Tuesday to Saturday: 9 AM – 4 PM; Sunday: 10 AM – 3 PM; Closed on Mondays
Location: Skanderbeg Square
Tips: Plan to spend 1-2 hours here. Don’t miss the Pavilion of Antiquity, which houses artifacts from Albania’s ancient past.
5
Admire Et`hem Bey Mosque
This small mosque is located right in the heart of Tirana. Although I didn’t enter because I wasn’t dressed appropriately, other tourists mentioned that the interior is beautifully decorated with intricate paintings on the walls and ceilings. This mosque also played a crucial role in preserving the city’s Islamic traditions, even more during periods of communist repression.
Entrance Fee: Free.
Opening Hours: Open during daylight hours, except during prayer times.
Location: Skanderbeg Square.
Tip: Dress modestly if you plan to enter.
6
Climb the Pyramid of Tirana
The Pyramid of Tirana, a concrete structure, may not be visually striking like the pyramids of Egypt, but the view from the top is worth the climb. Originally built in 1988 as a museum dedicated to Albania’s communist leader Enver Hoxha, it has since been transformed into a center for innovation, education, and public events.
Entrance Fee: Free.
Location: Boulevard Deshmoret e Kombit, Tirana.
7
Stop by Saint Paul Cathedral (Katedralja e Shën Palit)
We stopped at Saint Paul Cathedral during our walking tour, and it was a nice addition to the city’s sights. If your time in Tirana is limited, you might consider skipping this spot. But if you enjoy exploring new cities on foot, it’s worth a 15-minute stop.
Entrance Fee: Free.
Opening Hours: Open during daylight hours.
Location: Boulevard Zhan d’Ark, Tirana.
