4 Of the Best Things to Do in Podgorica, Montenegro

When people think of Montenegro, cities like Kotor, Virpazar, and Budva often come to mind first, with Podgorica, the capital, sometimes being overlooked. I decided to spend three days in Podgorica to explore what it has to offer. While Podgorica may not have as many activities as some of the more popular destinations, it still has its own unique charm. If your time in Montenegro is limited, you might focus on other cities, but if you have a bit more time, I recommend spending 2 days in Podgorica. Here are four of the best activities to do in this city:

  1. Have a Picnic at Njegošev Park
  2. Visit the Orthodox Temple of Christ’s Resurrection
  3. Enjoy the Morača River Under the Bridge
  4. Take a Day Trip to Virpazar

1

Have a Picnic at Njegošev Park

This large and peaceful park is an ideal place to enjoy a picnic, read a book, or spend quality time with friends while soaking up the sun. Situated near the Morača River, it’s the perfect spot to catch a breath of fresh air and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

I particularly enjoyed walking along the Morača Boardwalk, as I found it to be calmer than other parts of the park.

For your picnic, there are plenty of benches and green spaces where you can sit and enjoy your meal.

2

Visit the Orthodox Temple of Christ’s Resurrection

Like in most European cities, there’s always a cathedral worth visiting. In Podgorica, the Orthodox Temple of Christ’s Resurrection is a beautiful addition to your itinerary. Completed in 2013, this cathedral is a striking example of contemporary Serbian Orthodox architecture. Its gleaming white stone facade and richly decorated interior make it one of the most impressive sights in Podgorica. The entrance is free, and the cathedral is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Enjoy the Morača River Under the Bridge

Podgorica is the first capital I’ve visited with a beautiful, clear-water river. I was amazed by its color and cleanliness. I spent an afternoon under the Millennium Bridge with my feet in the icy water and even saw some dogs swimming in the river. If you’re looking for a relaxing activity where you can simply enjoy life, this is the one for you!

There’s a café called Na Moraču Plažni Bar (rated 4.6 stars on Google) right by the river. They only serve drinks, so it’s a great spot to enjoy a cocktail and some live music at night. You don’t have to sit at the café to be close to the river—you can find a cozy spot anywhere along the riverside near the Millennium Bridge.

Take a Day Trip to Virpazar

Virpazar is a small town located on Lake Skadar, one of Montenegro’s most popular attractions. A day trip from Podgorica to Virpazar is well worth it because all boat tours to explore the lake start there. To learn more about Virpazar, check out my article: 3 Of the Best Things to Do in Virpazar, Montenegro.

How to Get to Virpazar

Virpazar is easily accessible from major cities in Montenegro, such as Podgorica and Bar. From Podgorica, you can take a direct train, which is one of the most popular and scenic routes. The train journey takes about 30 minutes and costs only a few euros, offering picturesque views along the way. Buses are also available from Podgorica, taking around 40 minutes to reach Virpazar. If you’re coming from Bar, you can also catch a train that runs between Bar and Podgorica, with a stop in Virpazar. The journey from Bar takes approximately 20 minutes by train, making it a quick and convenient option.

You can purchase your tickets either directly at the train or bus station or online through transportation apps like Ohio. Booking online in advance is recommended to secure your seat and check the latest schedules.

For those who prefer driving, renting a car offers flexibility to explore the region at your own pace. The road to Virpazar is well-maintained and provides scenic views of Montenegro’s landscapes. Parking in Virpazar is generally available but may be limited during peak tourist seasons, so arriving early is recommended.
