My personal Opinion and Experience

When I think of my safety in Thailand, I do have positive thoughts. I have not felt in danger, but I have also not felt the most welcome. After being ignored a few times in restaurants and other public spaces, mostly by women, I started wondering what was happening.

While Thailand is known for its warm hospitality, it’s important to understand that some locals, particularly in heavily touristed areas, may feel overwhelmed or even fatigued by the constant influx of visitors. Additionally, some locals might feel that tourism-driven development has disrupted traditional ways of life, leading to a certain level of detachment. Despite this, most Thai people remain polite and courteous, though travelers should make an effort to be respectful of local customs and mindful of how their actions may be perceived in order to foster positive interactions.

Welcoming Locals and Culture

As I previously said, Thailand is known for its warm and welcoming locals, which greatly contributes to its reputation as a safe destination for solo travelers. Thai people are generally respectful and helpful, particularly toward visitors. The country’s strong cultural emphasis on respect, politeness, and hospitality creates a sense of safety and comfort for travelers exploring the country alone.

Additionally, the practice of Buddhism, which is deeply rooted in Thai culture, promotes values like compassion and kindness, further enhancing the atmosphere of care and mutual respect. Whether you’re navigating bustling markets or remote villages, you’ll often find locals willing to assist you with directions, recommendations, or a friendly smile, making Thailand feel like a secure and inviting destination for solo adventurers.

Constant Activity

Thailand’s constant activity and vibrant atmosphere contribute significantly to the feeling of safety for solo travelers. There’s always something happening at any hour of the day or night. Markets, street food vendors, and night bazaars keep the streets lively well into the evening, providing a sense of community and security as you’re rarely ever alone.

Well Developed Transportation System

Thailand’s transportation system is well-developed, making it easy and safe for solo travelers to navigate the country. From bustling cities to rural areas, there are plenty of reliable options available. In major cities like Bangkok, the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway provide clean, efficient, and safe ways to get around, with clear signage in English for tourists. Taxis, tuk-tuks, and ride-hailing services like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient way to travel, though it’s always a good idea to use apps to ensure fair pricing and track your route.

For longer distances, Thailand’s extensive bus and train networks provide safe and comfortable travel between cities. Sleeper trains and VIP buses are popular options for solo travelers, and many routes cater specifically to tourists, offering frequent schedules and safety measures like designated tourist police in bus terminals and train stations.

Additionally, domestic flights are abundant and affordable, allowing solo travelers to safely hop between Thailand’s various regions. The availability of trusted transportation options ensures that getting around Thailand as a solo traveler is not only convenient but also safe and manageable.

Abundant Accommodation Options

Having a great variety of accommodations means you’ll easily find a place that suits your needs and comfort levels. For solo travelers, Thailand’s numerous hostels are ideal.

Why Stay In a Hostel as a Solo Traveler?

These places not only provide a secure place to stay but also foster a sense of community, allowing you to meet fellow travelers. Many hostels organize group activities, tours, and social events, which can be a great way to explore the island safely while making new friends.

The help from the staff is also something you will love about hostels. They often provide valuable local advice, assist with arranging transportation, and offer recommendations for safe activities and places to visit. This level of support can be particularly reassuring for solo travelers, making them feel cared for and secure during their stay.

You’re a Last Minute Traveler like I Am?

Having many options also provides flexibility, allowing you to easily change your plans if needed. If you arrive at a location and don’t feel entirely comfortable, it’s relatively simple to find alternative accommodations nearby. This flexibility gives peace of mind, knowing that you’re never stuck in one place and can always move to a safer or more suitable environment if necessary.

Rating Systems on the Accommodations Apps

Online platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Hostelworld offer a vast selection of lodgings with detailed reviews and ratings from previous guests. This transparency helps you make informed decisions depending on your priorities and wishes. You can read comments from travelers just like you. There is nothing more relatable than that.

What to Look Out For in Thailand

Petty Theft (Pickpocket)

While Thailand is generally considered safe for solo travelers, there are still a few things to be mindful of to ensure a trouble-free trip. One of the most common issues is petty theft, especially in crowded areas such as night markets, tourist attractions, or busy streets. Be sure to keep your belongings close, use anti-theft bags, and avoid flashing valuables like expensive jewelry or electronics.

Transportation & Prices

When using transportation, particularly taxis or tuk-tuks, make sure to agree on a price before starting the ride or use a ride-hailing app like Grab to avoid being overcharged. It’s also worth noting that some motorbike rental shops may try to hold your passport as collateral, which is not recommended—always offer a photocopy instead.

Nightlife & Drugs

While Thailand is famous for its vibrant nightlife, it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings. Stick to well-lit areas, avoid excessive drinking, and don’t leave your drink unattended.

Sadly, I have to admit, I have been drugged in Thailand. If I hadn’t been with a trustworthy friend, who happened to not be drinking at that one club, who knows what could have happened. I am glad to say nothing happened to me thanks to her. This is a reminder to be extra careful when going out while traveling. It’s easy to make new but fake friends in a bar/club and for them to have extremely bad intentions.

Sex Trafficking

Now, let’s talk about sex trafficking. Whenever I mentioned my trip to Thailand to a family member, they would often ask, “Isn’t that the place with a lot of sex trafficking?” Unfortunately, sex trafficking does exist in many parts of the world, including Thailand. It involves the exploitation of individuals, often women and children, for the purpose of forced prostitution.

I mistakenly believed that the primary danger was for tourists. While it’s always important to stay vigilant, it’s uncommon for tourists to be kidnapped for sex trafficking in Thailand. The bigger concern for tourists regarding sex trafficking is unknowingly contributing to the problem by engaging in activities that exploit individuals who have been forced into the sex trade.

While visiting a strip club might be acceptable in your home country, I strongly advise against doing so in Thailand. Though we can never know for certain, many of the women in these clubs are likely not there by choice, and the money you spend often doesn’t go to them. The same goes for “ping-pong” shows. I won’t explain what they are, but the principle remains the same—these activities are exploitative and should be avoided.

Safety Tips

  • Use Taxi Apps: Stick to apps like Grab (Uber is not available in this country) to ensure a fair price and added safety through driver identification.
  • Bring a Padlock: If staying in hostels, carry a sturdy padlock for securing your belongings in provided lockers.
  • Carry a Personal Alarm: A small, loud personal alarm can deter attackers and attract attention in emergencies.
  • Stay Connected: Regularly update loved ones on your whereabouts and share your location via smartphone apps.
  • Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, leave immediately. Your safety is paramount.
  • Respect Local Culture: Dress modestly and follow local customs to blend in and avoid unwanted attention.
  • Avoid Flashing Valuables: Keep expensive items out of sight to reduce the risk of theft.
  • Secure Your Valuables: Use a crossbody bag with a zipper, worn in front, to keep your essentials safe.
  • Keep Emergency Numbers Handy: Save local emergency numbers in your phone and write them down as a backup.
  • Keep Your Phone Charged: Carry a power bank to ensure your phone is always charged.
  • Learn Basic Phrases: Know essential phrases in the local language for emergencies and basic communication.
  • Get Travel Insurance: Ensure your insurance covers medical emergencies, theft, and trip cancellations.

Make Friends Before and During Your Trip

Solo traveling doesn’t mean you have to be alone the entire time—unless, of course, that’s what you prefer, which is perfectly okay too. Thanks to the power of social media, it’s now easier than ever to make friends while traveling. Here’s, in my opinion, the best and easiest way to do so:

Facebook Groups

In my travels, I met many friends through a Facebook group called “The Female Solo Traveler Network.” Don’t hesitate to post in these groups, ask for advice, or even suggest meeting up with others. You might find someone to join you for part of your trip, or even plan an entire journey together! However, be cautious of potential scams—always ask for a video call to verify the person’s identity before making any plans.
