Let’s talk about Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital, Sarajevo. When reading about the country, you’ll quickly notice that two cities are often highlighted: Mostar and Sarajevo. So, what makes Sarajevo stand out from the other cities? The answer is simple: Sarajevo is a vibrant, culturally rich city with plenty to offer. Most of its attractions are within walking distance of each other, and the friendly atmosphere combined with a lively nightlife makes it a must-visit destination.
To understand Sarajevo’s unique charm, it helps to know a bit about its history. The city began as a lively trade center during the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, which laid the foundation for its rich cultural tapestry. Later, under Austro-Hungarian rule, Sarajevo absorbed Western European influences that added to its diverse architectural and cultural landscape. In the 20th century, Sarajevo gained worldwide attention as the site of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination, an event that triggered World War I. The city also endured a devastating siege during the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s, showcasing its resilience through incredibly challenging times.
Now that you know why Sarajevo is definitely worth exploring, here’s a list of 7 of the best things to do in the city:
- Explore the Old Town
- Discover the Sarajevo Tunnel Museum
- Visit the Latin Bridge
- Watch the Sunset from the Yellow Fortress
- Walk on Ferhadija Street
- Join a Free Walking Tour
- Enjoy the Nightlife
1
Explore the Old Town
Baščaršija, Sarajevo’s Old Town, is the heart of the city and its main attraction. As you wander through its narrow streets, you’ll find shops selling handmade crafts and souvenirs, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere.
Two must-see landmarks in Baščaršija are the Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque and the Sebilj Fountain. The Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque is one of the most important Islamic structures in the Balkans, easily recognized by its striking 45-meter-high minaret. The Sebilj Fountain is surrounded by a local legend that says anyone who drinks from it is destined to return to Sarajevo, ensuring a lasting connection to the city.
History: Baščaršija dates back to the 15th century and was once the bustling center of trade in the Balkans.
Opening Hours: Shops are generally open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, though some may stay open later.
2
Discover the Sarajevo Tunnel Museum
The Sarajevo Tunnel Museum, also known as the Tunnel of Hope, was a lifeline for the city during the Bosnian War. It was used to transport supplies and people in and out of Sarajevo during the siege. Today, the tunnel provides a powerful insight into the city’s recent history.
Entrance Fee: 10 BAM (around $8 CAD).
Opening Hours: Open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Transportation: It’s located further from the city center, so you’ll need to take a taxi or a bus. Take bus number 103 from Sarajevo’s city center towards Dobrinja and get off at the “Aerodromsko Naselje” stop, followed by a 15-20 minute walk to reach the museum. A taxi ride from the city center to the museum typically costs around 15-20 BAM (12-16$ CAD).
Additional Info: The tunnel is shorter than many expect, and in some sections, it’s too low to stand upright.
3
Visit the Latin Bridge
The Latin Bridge is a historic landmark located just a 5-minute walk from the Old Town. It is famously known as the site where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, an event that ignited the start of World War I. In addition to its historical importance, the bridge provides beautiful views of the Miljacka River.
History: The bridge has been rebuilt several times, with the current structure dating back to the 18th century.
4
Watch the Sunset from the Yellow Fortress
The Yellow Fortress is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Sarajevo. It’s a popular spot for both tourists and locals, offering panoramic views of the city. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the Old Town.
Entrance Fee: Completely free to visit.
Opening Hours: Open 24/7, but sunset is the best time to go.

Walk on Ferhadija Street
Ferhadija Street is one of Sarajevo’s oldest streets, now transformed into a vibrant pedestrian zone filled with shops, cafés, and restaurants. It’s a great place to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the city, do some shopping, or savor a meal at one of the local eateries.
Opening Hours: Shops typically open from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
6
Join a Free Walking Tour
Although I couldn’t join a free walking tour in Sarajevo due to illness, it comes highly recommended. These tours are a fantastic way to learn about the city’s history and culture. Most hostels and hotels offer free walking tours. You can also find stands promoting them along Ferhadija Street.
Duration: Tours usually last 1–2 hours.
Additional Info: While the tour is free, tipping the guide is customary and appreciated, as this is their primary source of income.
7
Enjoy the Nightlife
Sarajevo’s nightlife is vibrant and diverse, catering to all tastes. Whether you’re into dancing, live music, or just enjoying a drink with friends, the city has plenty to offer.
Recommendations:
- Silver & Smoke Club: Known for its energetic atmosphere and eclectic music mix.
- Monument Club: Popular for its lively parties and live performances, located in the heart of the city.
Opening Hours: Most clubs open around 10:00 PM and stay open until the early hours of the morning.
Additional Info: Sarajevo is generally safe at night, but like in any city, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to you at all time.
