Where is Yelapa

Yelapa is a small village in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, situated near Puerto Vallarta. It is located along the Bay of Banderas on the Pacific coast, surrounded by lush jungle and beautiful ocean views.

How to Get to Yelapa

Yelapa is only accessible by boat from Puerto Vallarta or Boca de Tomatlán. The most convenient option is taking a water taxi, with regular departures from the Los Muertos Pier in Puerto Vallarta and Boca de Tomatlán.

Details for Water Taxi from Los Muertos:

  • Round-trip ticket: 500 pesos per person
  • One-way ticket: 300 pesos per person
  • Departure times: 10:00 am, 11:00 am, 11:45 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, and 5:00 pm
  • Duration: Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour each way

Travel Tip: You can purchase your ticket from one of the boat company stands near the pier or directly on the boat. It’s easy to find same-day rides, but always check the weather conditions for a safe trip.

Boca de Tomatlán Option: Boca de Tomatlán is a village located halfway between Puerto Vallarta and Yelapa. While I haven’t personally visited this area, it’s another popular spot for catching a water taxi. Check local sources for the latest schedules and prices.

What Makes Yelapa Special

Yelapa’s unique charm can be attributed to two main factors:

Indigenous Heritage

Yelapa is one of the few remaining communities where the original inhabitants still own and manage their land. The village is part of a larger indigenous community that spans approximately 25,000 hectares.

No Cars

The absence of cars contributes to the village’s peaceful atmosphere. Although some locals use 4-wheelers and motorbikes, they are in the minority. Horses and donkeys are often seen in daily life. The lack of cars and roads creates a tranquil environment that’s unlike nearby Puerto Vallarta, making Yelapa a perfect escape for those seeking quiet and simplicity.

How Long Should You Stay in Yelapa

Your stay in Yelapa can vary based on what kind of experience you’re seeking:

Day Trip

Great for a quick look at the village and its main attractions. While you’ll get a feel for the area, you may miss out on Yelapa’s peaceful side due to the influx of day-trippers. If you’re short on time in Mexico, a day trip still allows you to see this amazing place.

Overnight Stay

Offers the chance to experience Yelapa’s tranquility once the day-trippers leave. Note that restaurant schedules rotate daily to maximize attendance, so staying one night may limit your dining options.  Per example, The Yacht Club, known for live music and a lively atmosphere, is a very fun place to visit, but it’s not open every day.

Week-long Stay

Ideal for travelers who want to unwind, try a variety of restaurants, and experience all the village has to offer. With a longer stay, you can fully appreciate the peaceful environment, explore local waterfalls, go sea fishing, and make connections with locals.
