7 Of the Best Things to Do in Monaco

Monaco is a tiny yet glamorous country surrounded by its neighbor, France, known for its vibrant atmosphere, luxury lifestyle, and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. Whether you’re seeking high-stakes excitement or simply want to soak in the glamorous ambiance, Monaco offers a unique experience for everyone.

Established as a principality in 1297 by the Grimaldi family, who still rule today, Monaco became a hub for luxury and glamor in the late 19th century with the opening of the Monte Carlo Casino. Thanks to its close ties with France, French is the official language of the country.

Here are seven activities you must do when visiting Monaco:

  1. Walk in the Old Town of Monaco
  2. Watch the F1 Monaco Grand Prix
  3. Visit Monte Carlo Casino
  4. Visit the Oceanographic Museum
  5. Discover the Monaco Top Cars Collection
  6. Check Out the Prince’s Palace
  7. Visit Monaco Cathedral

1

Walk in the Old Town of Monaco

The Old Town of Monaco, also known as Monaco-Ville, is a charming historic district perched on a hill, with narrow, winding cobblestone streets and architecture that reflects its medieval origins.

The area offers stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the modern city below. It’s the perfect place to sit at a café and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

Key attractions in Monaco-Ville include Monaco Cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum.

2

Watch the F1 Monaco Grand Prix

This activity is only possible in late May or early June, depending on the year. The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious and iconic Formula 1 races in the world. For four days, the city transforms into a racing circuit, with the race taking place on the narrow streets of Monte-Carlo. The Grand Prix is also famous for its lively atmosphere and extravagant parties.

If attending the Grand Prix is out of your budget (as it can be quite expensive), I highly suggest visiting a few days before the race. You can still enjoy the atmosphere and watch the F1 teams set up for the event!

I visited Monaco exactly one week before the start of the F1 Grand Prix. The city was already buzzing with preparations, and it was impressive to see all the work that goes into this event. My favorite spot was between La Rascasse Bar and Brasserie de Monaco, where I could watch the paddock being assembled.

5

Discover the Monaco Top Cars Collection

The Monaco Top Cars Collection is an exclusive car museum, which is actually the personal collection of the Prince of Monaco. The museum features a remarkable range of rare and prestigious automobiles, including vintage, luxury, and F1 cars.

I was initially skeptical about this activity since I’m not particularly interested in cars. However, the collection is so diverse that I ended up having a great time, especially admiring the vintage cars. I highly recommend adding this museum to your itinerary.

Entrance fee: 10€ (15 CAD) for adults and 5€ (7 CAD) for students and children.
