Situated in northern Vietnam, Hanoi is not only the capital city but also one of the oldest cities in Southeast Asia. Known for its bustling markets and vibrant street life, Hanoi offers a blend of Vietnam’s rich heritage and dynamic present. If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, I recommend spending at least two full days in this captivating city. Here are the top activities and things to do in Hanoi:
- Explore the Old Quarter
- Experience Hanoi Train Street
- Take a Ha Long Bay Day Trip
- Shop at Dong Xuan Market
- Relax at Hoan Kiem Lake
- Visit Ngoc Son Temple
1
Explore the Old Quarter
The Old Quarter is one of the most iconic and vibrant neighborhoods in Hanoi, with most of the city’s activities centered here. The narrow, winding streets form a labyrinth filled with bustling markets, street vendors, and shops selling everything from silk garments to local handicrafts and souvenirs. The lively atmosphere, combined with the rich historical significance, makes it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the essence of Hanoi’s culture, history, and everyday life.
What to See in the Old Quarter – Two important streets you shouldn’t miss:
- Hang Gai Street: Known for its luxurious silk products.
- Hang Bac Street: Famous for its traditional jewelry shops.

Experience Hanoi Train Street
One of the most unique things to do in Hanoi is visiting Hanoi Train Street, where you can enjoy a drink at a local café as a train passes just meters away. This thrilling and iconic activity has become a must for travelers visiting Hanoi. The street is located in the Old Quarter, and you can easily find it by searching “Hanoi Train Street” on Google Maps.
Best Time to Visit: The train passes twice daily—at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.—so be sure to time your visit accordingly.
Important Note: During the day, locals manage access to the street. You are only allowed to stay in the street if you’re seated at a café and have ordered something.
Insider Tip: If you want to capture the perfect photo or video of the train passing, arrive early to get a good spot!

Take a Ha Long Bay Day Trip
A visit to Vietnam wouldn’t be complete without experiencing Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its breathtaking emerald-green waters and 1,600 limestone islands. This natural wonder is one of Vietnam’s most iconic attractions and is easily accessible as a day trip from Hanoi.
Your Ha Long Bay day trip will vary depending on the company you book with, but common activities include watching the sunrise or sunset, visiting Ti Top Island (with its pristine sandy beaches), exploring the majestic Sung Sot Cave, and kayaking while observing monkeys on the islands.
Booking Tips:
- You can book your Ha Long Bay tour online or through your hotel.
- We booked through the JW Marriott Hotel for three people and spent the day on a catamaran, with all meals (except breakfast) included, along with hotel transportation.
Insider Tip: Be sure to confirm which activities are included in your tour before booking, as this can vary greatly between companies.

Shop at Dong Xuan Market
Dong Xuan Market is one of the largest and oldest indoor markets in Hanoi. This bustling market offers an incredible range of goods, from clothing and souvenirs to local street food and handicrafts. One of my favorite purchases, a silk top, came from this market—so be on the lookout for unique items!
Insider Tips for Dong Xuan Market:
- Bargaining is common here, so don’t be shy about haggling for the best price.
- A good strategy is to ask several vendors for their prices and then negotiate from there. Vendors often start with higher prices, but a friendly laugh and a much lower counter-offer can lead to a fair deal.
Pro Tip: Start your bargaining at about half of the vendor’s asking price, and work your way to a middle ground.

Relax at Hoan Kiem Lake
Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake, is a peaceful oasis in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Its serene waters, lush greenery, and charming bridges make it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. The lake is not just a scenic spot but also holds deep cultural and historical significance for the Vietnamese people.
Best Times to Visit:
- Early morning for a quiet, relaxing walk.
- In the evening when the area is beautifully lit up, and you can enjoy the lively atmosphere.
Insider Tip: Don’t miss the chance to see locals practicing tai chi around the lake in the morning!
6
Visit Ngoc Son Temple
Ngoc Son Temple, also known as the Temple of the Jade Mountain, is situated on a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake and is connected to the mainland by the famous red-painted Huc Bridge. This temple is a popular attraction due to its religious and architectural significance. Whether you want to pay your respects, offer prayers, or simply admire the beautiful surroundings, Ngoc Son Temple is a must-see.
What to Expect: Inside the temple, you’ll find historic artifacts and statues that reflect Vietnam’s cultural and spiritual history.
Ticket Prices: Free for children under 15, 15,000 VND ($0.80 CAD) for students and 30,000 VND ($1.65 CAD) for adults.
Insider Tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
