3 Of the Best Things to Do in Moalboal, Philippines

Moalboal is a charming coastal town on Cebu Island, best known for its world-class diving spot, the Sardine Run. This natural phenomenon allows divers and snorkelers to swim alongside millions of sardines, creating an unforgettable underwater experience. But Moalboal offers so much more beyond its famous Sardine Run. It’s the ideal starting point for the popular three-stop itinerary when exploring Cebu Island, which typically includes Moalboal, Oslob, and Siquijor after arriving in Cebu City. That’s exactly what I did, and I couldn’t be happier to have begun my journey with such a wonderful destination.

But Moalboal isn’t just a paradise for water enthusiasts; the laid-back atmosphere of the town, combined with its range of cozy beach resorts and local eateries, creates a welcoming environment for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re exploring the underwater wonders, kayaking along the coast, or enjoying a sunset by the beach, Moalboal offers a diverse array of experiences. Here are three of the best activities to experience in Moalboal:

  1. Snorkeling – Swim with Sardines and Turtles
  2. Kawasan Falls – Visit on Your Own or Book a Canyoning Tour
  3. Relax on the Beach

Snorkeling: Swim with Sardines and Turtles

The Sardine Run in Moalboal is a unique experience. Massive schools of sardines swim along the coast, making it a popular attraction for both divers and snorkelers. One of the best parts? It’s free! If you don’t have snorkeling gear, you can rent equipment at the site for just a few dollars. In addition to the sardines, you may even spot sea turtles swimming alongside you, making the experience even more memorable.

I found it incredibly impressive to see so many fish swimming together—truly a breathtaking experience!

Where to Go: Search for “Moalboal Sardine Run” or “Cebu Sardine Run” on Google Maps, and it will lead you to the exact location.

Cost: Renting snorkeling gear typically costs around PHP 100-200 (2-4$ CAD).

Kawasan Falls

Kawasan Falls is a stunning three-level waterfall located in the jungle of Badian, near Moalboal. Its turquoise waters form natural pools perfect for swimming. There are two ways to experience Kawasan Falls: on your own or by booking a canyoning tour.

By Yourself

  • As of April 2024, only the level 1 waterfall is accessible to tourists who don’t book a canyoning tour.
  • It’s about a 30–40 minute ride from Moalboal to the falls. You can either rent a scooter for around PHP 400 (10$ CAD) per day or take the local bus. The round-trip bus fare between Moalboal and Kawasan Falls is PHP 46 (1.10$ CAD).
  • From the parking area, it’s a 15-minute walk to the level 1 waterfall.
  • The entrance fee in 2024 for access to the level 1 waterfall is PHP 200.

Canyoning Tour

This is what I did, and I highly recommend it! Canyoning at Kawasan Falls was one of the highlights of my trip, allowing me to explore more of the jungle and the falls.

Canyoning involves hiking, climbing, jumping, and swimming through canyons, and it’s an exciting way to experience the natural beauty of the area.

  • This canyoning tour allows you to swim down the Matutinao River, swing a Tarzan rope, and jump from one waterfall level to another.
  • Most tours last about 3 hours (excluding transportation time). The difficulty level is beginner-friendly but does require a moderate level of fitness.
  • Tour prices range from PHP 1,200 to PHP 2,500 (30-60$ CAD), depending on the company. Most tours include private transportation from your hotel.

The company I choose for my tour:

Canyoneering Experience in Kawasan Falls with Lunch: This company is awesome. The group size is smaller, so the experience feels more personalized. Our guides were friendly and fun, and the Filipino lunch included at the end was one of the best meals I had in the country.

Enjoy the Beach

White Beach is Moalboal’s main beach and a must-visit. This long stretch of white sand and clear turquoise water is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and even beach volleyball. There are also a few restaurants on one side of the beach, making it a convenient spot for a snack or meal.

  • Best for Sunset: White Beach is one of the best places in Moalboal to watch the sunset, offering stunning views over the ocean.
  • Activities: You can rent paddleboards or snorkeling gear directly at the beach.

Even though it’s a popular spot, White Beach never feels overcrowded, making it an ideal place to relax.
