4 Of the Best Things to Do on Panglao Island, Philippines

Panglao Island, nestled just southwest of Bohol in the Philippines, is easy to reach by bridge or ferry. Despite its small size, the island boasts stunning white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a lively atmosphere, making it a favorite among travelers seeking both new friends and adventure. Its vibrant energy and lively atmosphere make it a perfect destination for those looking to immerse themselves in a place full of life and excitement.

Whether you’re drawn to the island’s natural wonders or its vibrant nightlife, Panglao offers an unforgettable experience. The island is also home to several renowned diving sites, where you can explore the rich marine biodiversity and vibrant coral reefs. Additionally, the local hospitality, delicious cuisine, and numerous bars create an inviting atmosphere for visitors. From soaking up the sun on Alona Beach to hiking the Chocolate Hills, there’s something for every type of traveler.

To help you make the most of your visit, here are four must-do activities that should be on your itinerary:

  1. Hinagdanan Cave
  2. Chocolate Hills
  3. Enjoy the Beaches
  4. Enjoy the Nightlife

1

Hinagdanan Cave

Hinagdanan Cave is a limestone cave featuring impressive stalactites and stalagmites, with an underground lake where visitors can swim. It’s one of the island’s most popular activities, conveniently accessible from major locations like Alona Beach.

Entrance Fee: 75 pesos (around $1.75 CAD), which includes the option to swim inside.

Opening Hours: Open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM.

Best Time to Visit: Mornings are typically less crowded, so visiting early is ideal to enjoy the cave in peace.

Tips:

  • Wear non-slip shoes as the cave floor can be slippery.
  • There are tour guides available at the entrance who provide interesting facts about the cave.

2

Chocolate Hills

Although the Chocolate Hills are located on Bohol Island, not Panglao, they’re worth mentioning due to their popularity. I recommend booking a day trip from Panglao to visit this unique geological formation.

The Chocolate Hills consist of over 1,200 cone-shaped hills. During the dry season, the grass covering the hills turns brown, giving them a chocolate-like appearance. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from observation points and platforms.

Entrance Fee: The Chocolate Hills viewing deck costs around 50 pesos ($1 CAD).

Opening Hours: Open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM.

Best Time to Visit: The dry season (December to May) is the best time to visit, as this is when the hills take on their signature chocolate-brown color.

Tips:

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes as there are several stairs to climb to reach the observation decks.
  • Book a guided tour to learn more about the history and formation of the hills.

Explore the Beaches

Panglao’s beaches are just as beautiful as those across the Philippines. However, since the island is both small and popular, some beaches are more crowded than others. Here are the main ones to explore:

1. Alona Beach: The most popular and busiest beach, with plenty of tourists, bars, and restaurants. Ideal for those seeking powdery white sand and vibrant nightlife.

  • Price: Free entry, but you’ll need to pay for sun loungers and umbrellas (around 200-300 pesos).
  • Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds.

2. Doljo Beach: A quieter alternative with beautiful sunset views.

  • Best Time to Visit: Late afternoon to enjoy a peaceful sunset.

3. Momo Beach: A great spot for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing away from the crowds.

  • Tip: Pack a picnic and plenty of water, as there are limited dining options nearby.

4. Bikini Beach: The least touristy option, perfect for those seeking privacy and solitude.

  • Best Time to Visit: Anytime, as it’s usually quiet.
  • Tip: This beach has no facilities, so bring everything you’ll need for the day.

Experience the Nightlife

Panglao has a lively nightlife scene. During my stay at Mad Monkey Hostel, I noticed that almost everyone there had the time of their lives each night. The hotspots for nightlife change each week and season, so it’s best to check with Mad Monkey (even if you’re not staying there) to find out where the party is. You can also ask your hostel if they offer a pub crawl or have recommendations. Either way, you’re sure to have fun wherever you go!

Tips:

  • Stick to well-lit areas and avoid walking alone at night, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area.
  • Make sure to hydrate and pace yourself, especially in the heat.
