Each night, we slept soundly, embraced by the tranquil atmosphere of the Ecolodge. With the right preparation and knowledge, your stay at El Jardin can become a memorable highlight of your Mexican adventure.

What Atmosphere Can You Expect at El Jardin?

From the moment you arrive, Matias ensures you feel like part of the family. Jézabel and I had numerous meaningful conversations with him, and we both agree that El Jardin strikes a perfect balance between hotel privacy and the friendly, communal vibe of a hostel.

The property offers hammocks, lounge chairs, a ping pong table, and more, fostering a friendly environment. With only four rooms, guests often get to know each other, creating an intimate and welcoming atmosphere. Even if you prefer not to interact with others, the warm, friendly smiles exchanged among guests contribute to the overall cozy environment.

What to Bring for Your Stay at El Jardin?

Here are some essential items to pack for your stay at El Jardin:

  • Backpack: We had a suitcase for three people, and it was tough to bring it to the Ecolodge. A backpack is recommended because it’s trail-friendly.
  • Flashlight: There’s no lighting on the trail after dark, so bring a flashlight to navigate, especially if your phone battery runs out.
  • Cash: There are no ATMs in Yelapa, so make sure to bring enough cash for your entire stay. You can withdraw cash in Puerto Vallarta before taking the boat. Most restaurants don’t accept cards, and those that do often charge a 5–10% fee.
  • Bug spray: All beds at El Jardin have mosquito nets, but bug spray is useful to ensure you stay bite-free during the evenings.
  • Reusable water bottle: El Jardin provides purified water, so bring a reusable bottle to stay hydrated.
  • Weather-appropriate gear: Don’t forget your hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water shoes, sandals, sturdy shoes for hiking, and rain gear (if visiting between June and October).

Best Times to Visit

Yelapa experiences distinct seasons, which can influence your stay:

  • Dry Season (November to May): Offers warm weather and minimal rain, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking.
  • Rainy Season (June to October): While rain may make trails muddy, it brings lush greenery and fewer tourists—ideal for those who prefer solitude.
  • Whale-Watching Season (December to March): Plan your visit during these months to catch humpback whales in Banderas Bay.

Transportation and Logistics

Yelapa is accessible only by boat, with water taxis departing regularly from Los Muertos Pier in Puerto Vallarta. The round-trip fare is about 500 pesos per person (36 CAD), or 300 pesos (22 CAD) one way. The journey takes 45 minutes to an hour.
