Marrakech, a vibrant jewel in Morocco, is renowned for its bustling souks, unique cultural experiences, and stunning gardens. As home to the second-busiest airport in the country, it’s likely that your Moroccan adventure will begin or end in this dynamic city. Marrakech is more than just a city—it’s an essential stop on any Moroccan itinerary.
What to Expect: Marrakech is arguably the most energetic and dynamic city in Morocco, offering a sensory-rich experience like no other. From the lively markets filled with the aromas of exotic spices to the vibrant colors that adorn every corner, the city is a feast for the senses. Be prepared for crowds year-round, and keep in mind that Marrakech is warm even in winter—when I visited in November, temperatures soared to 38 degrees Celsius, giving a hint of how intense the summer heat can be.
You won’t run out of things to do here, which is why I recommend spending at least three full days exploring the city. Here are the top activities to make the most of your visit:
- Walk in the Medina & Souks
- Visit the Jardin Majorelle
- Explore & Have a Drink at La Mamounia Hotel
- Relax at a Traditional Hammam
- Take a Trip to the Merzouga Sahara Desert

Walk in the Medina & Souks
The Medina was the highlight of my stay in Marrakech. Walking through this iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site feels like navigating a vast labyrinth. It’s filled with narrow alleys, traditional markets, street food, beautiful architecture, and shops. The explosion of colors and scents creates an experience you need to live at least once.
Aside from wandering through the winding alleys, here are two other must-see spots in the Medina:
- Jemaa el-Fnaa Square: This is where most of the action happens, with restaurants, street performers, and a lively atmosphere. If you’re looking for excitement, this is the place to be!
- Koutoubia Mosque: An impressive symbol of the city, visible from various points. However, non-Muslims are not permitted to enter this mosque.
Tips: Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and the biggest crowds. Keep an eye on your belongings, as the Medina can get crowded. It’s also helpful to carry small change for purchases or tips.
Explanation: A “Medina” refers to the old, historical part of a city. Here are some defining characteristics:
- Walled City: Medinas are often enclosed by walls and feature narrow, winding streets.
- Ancient Architecture: The architecture in Medinas includes traditional buildings, mosques, palaces, and markets (souks).
- Souks (Marketplaces): Medinas typically have bustling souks where locals and tourists can buy a variety of goods, from spices and textiles to handcrafted items and food.

Visit the Jardin Majorelle
Jardin Majorelle is a botanical garden within Marrakech, offering a serene escape from the chaos of the city. Originally created by Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent, the garden is home to exotic plants, vivid blue structures, and two museums. The first museum is dedicated to Berber culture, showcasing artifacts, textiles, and jewelry from Morocco’s indigenous Berber people. The second is the Yves Saint Laurent Museum.
Location: Rue Yves Saint Laurent, Marrakech
Opening Hours: Open daily from 8 AM to 6:30 PM
Price: Prices vary depending on the package you choose (with or without museum access, age groups, students, etc.). Tickets can be purchased on-site or online. Click here to visit the official website for more details.
Tips: Arrive early to avoid crowds, especially if you want to take photos. The garden is small, so 1-2 hours is sufficient to explore everything.

Explore & Have a Drink at La Mamounia Hotel
The luxurious La Mamounia Hotel is a great place to explore, especially if you’re interested in stunning architecture and lush gardens. I enjoyed exploring the hotel during a hot day, taking advantage of the shade provided by the trees.
It’s free to explore the hotel grounds, but it’s also a fantastic spot to enjoy a refreshing drink while surrounded by luxury.
Location: Avenue Bab Jdid, Marrakech

Relax at a Traditional Hammam
A traditional hammam is a type of public bath that has been integral to North African cultures for centuries. The experience involves several steps of relaxation and purification, including body scrubbing with exfoliating gloves, a rinse with warm water, and a massage.
Why You Need to Experience This:
- Cultural Insight: It offers a unique look into local traditions and social practices.
- Health Benefits: The hammam improves circulation, detoxifies the body, and helps reduce stress.
Location: Hammams can be found throughout Marrakech, with popular options including Hammam de la Rose and Les Bains de Marrakech.
Price: Depends on the services you choose: ranging from 200-500 MAD (20-50$ CAD) for a basic treatment.
Tips: Bring a change of clothes, and be prepared for a very different bathing experience compared to Western spas.

Take a Trip to the Merzouga Sahara Desert
My trip to the Sahara Desert in Morocco is one of my all-time favorite memories. I started my journey from my hostel in Marrakech, which is why I recommend including this activity in your visit to the city.
How to Get There: The trip to Merzouga typically involves a multi-day tour departing from Marrakech. These tours often include transportation, accommodation in desert camps, meals, and guided activities.
Price: Depends on the tour operator and the duration of the trip, but expect to pay between 1000-3000 MAD (approximately 130-390$ CAD) for a 3-day trip.
