Where to Go: Lanquin, Your Gateway to Semuc Champey

Lanquin is your go-to base for exploring Semuc Champey. Set at a lower altitude than many parts of Guatemala, it’s noticeably warmer, making it a great spot to enjoy the tropical surroundings. However, Semuc Champey is the main attraction here, so unless you plan to visit the river multiple times, you likely won’t need to stay long.

How to Get There

If you’re planning a trip to Flores and Tikal, consider visiting them first and then heading to Lanquin. If you’re skipping Tikal, your journey will likely begin in Antigua. Be prepared for a long trip!

  • Antigua to Lanquin: Expect to pay between 150GTQ to 300GTQ, with a travel time of 8 to 10 hours depending on road conditions.
  • Flores to Lanquin: Prices range from 250GTQ to 400GTQ, with a similar travel time. The higher cost is due to fewer transportation options.

Tips

  • Book in advance, especially if traveling from Flores, as seats fill up quickly.
  • Compare prices and schedules across tour operators.
  • Check with your hostel or hotel for shuttle services.
  • Consider traveling overnight to avoid losing a full day in transit. However, be sure to check the conditions of the transport, such as whether it’s a small shuttle without toilets or a larger bus with amenities like reclining seats.

Best Hostels in Lanquin

During our trip, two hostels stood out: Zephyr Lodge and Vista Verde Hostal. Keep in mind, both require a minimum stay of two nights, even if you planned a shorter stay. Maybe it’s not the case all year round but it was in January 2024. Lanquin is a popular spot, and hostels can book up quickly.

  • Vista Verde Hostal: A more relaxed option with cool rooms, a nice pool, and an affordable restaurant. Dorm prices hover around $15 CAD per night.
  • Zephyr Lodge: A popular choice among backpackers, known for its party vibe, modern amenities, and breathtaking views from the pool. Dorm prices are about $30 CAD per night, but many say the splurge is worth it.

How to Get to the River

There are two main options to get to the river: a Collectivo or a private Tuk-tuk.

  • Collectivo: A shared ride in the back of a pickup truck, where you’ll most likely stand for the 45-minute journey to Semuc Champey. It costs around 25-30GTQ per person one way. Trucks leave every 15-20 minutes from the main square.
  • Tuk-tuk: A bumpy but fun ride that costs about the same per person when sharing with others. Drivers often hustle for business, so feel free to negotiate. You can even arrange for a driver to pick you up later, making the return trip easy.

Hiking: If you’re up for an adventure, you can hike to Semuc Champey in about 2-3 hours. This provides a more immersive experience, but it’s not recommended during the rainy season due to slippery conditions.

Entrance Fees and Guided Tours

The entrance fee for Semuc Champey is 50GTQ per person (approximately $9 CAD). Guided tours are also available, offering a deeper dive into the history and natural beauty of the area.

Activities Beyond Swimming

While swimming in the pools is a highlight, there’s much more to do:

1. Hiking to El Mirador: This moderately challenging trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the turquoise pools and the surrounding jungle. The hike takes about 30-45 minutes each way.

2. Explore Kan’Ba Cave: This guided adventure takes you through the caves by candlelight. You’ll wade through rivers, climb waterfalls, and explore dark passageways. It’s thrilling but be sure to wear water-friendly clothes and shoes.

3. Tubing on the Cahabon River: A relaxing activity where you float down a gentle section of the river in an inner tube. Perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.
