The three Gili Islands—Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air—each offer unique experiences and cater to different types of travelers. Whether you’re a backpacker looking for lively nightlife, a couple seeking a romantic escape, or someone who desires a peaceful retreat, the Gili Islands have something for everyone. Here’s a breakdown to help you choose the best island for your stay and make the most out of your visit to this tropical paradise.

- Gili Air: A perfect blend of relaxation and activity, with a romantic vibe.

Gili Trawangan
The Busiest and the Cheapest
Gili Trawangan, often referred to as Gili T, is the largest of the three islands, covering just 3.4 square kilometers. It attracts the most visitors annually, offering a wide variety of hostels, villas, and hotels. Due to the abundance of accommodations, prices are generally lower, making it the most budget-friendly option.
Party Island for Backpackers and Young Souls
Gili T is known for its vibrant nightlife. Bars and clubs stay open until dawn, catering to those looking to party. With a wide range of venues offering different atmospheres, you’re guaranteed to have a great time if nightlife is what you’re after.
Drugs on Gili Trawangan
Warning: I’m not encouraging drug use, but it’s important to be aware of the presence of drugs on the island. There’s a misconception that drugs are legal on the Gili Islands due to the lack of strict enforcement. There’s no police presence on any of the Gili Islands, and drugs like magic mushrooms are easily accessible, particularly at beach bars. Weed and other substances are also available, though I don’t have further details as I didn’t inquire.
The Peaceful Side of Gili Trawangan
The island is divided into two distinct sides: one for sunrises and the other for sunsets. The sunrise side is busier, with more restaurants, parties, and general activity. The sunset side, in contrast, is calm and quiet, perfect for relaxing on the beach and enjoying the tranquil environment.
My Take on Gili Trawangan
Personally, I believe Gili Trawangan is the best place to stay. I stayed at the Royal Regantris Trawangan and loved my experience. The staff was amazing, they hosted movie nights, breakfast was included, and the atmosphere was serene. Staying on the sunset side was the best decision—I had peace and quiet when I wanted it, and it was just a 15-minute bike ride to the lively side of the island.
Note: If you’re traveling with family, Gili Trawangan might not be the best option.

2
Gili Meno
The Smallest
Gili Meno is the smallest of the three islands, covering just 1.5 square kilometers. Due to its size and fewer accommodation options, prices tend to be higher following the principles of supply and demand.
Is Gili Meno for Everyone?
Not really. If you’re seeking a remote, quiet escape, Gili Meno is for you. However, if you’re looking for variety in dining, a wide range of tours, and more activities beyond relaxing on the beach, you might find Gili Meno a bit dull.
My Take on Gili Meno
Many tours from Gili Trawangan include a stop on Gili Meno for a brief visit, which, in my opinion, might be all you need.
3
Gili Air
Looking for a Honeymoon Vibe?
Gili Air is ideal for families and travelers who want a more relaxed experience without the intensity of Gili Trawangan. The island offers more dining options and even a few cocktail bars, making it more lively than Gili Meno but still peaceful.
The Perfect Balance
If you’re looking for a balance between tranquility and a bit of action, Gili Air is the island for you. It offers a laid-back atmosphere with just enough entertainment to keep things interesting.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right Gili Island for your stay ultimately depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Gili Trawangan is perfect for those who love a bustling atmosphere and don’t mind the party scene. Gili Meno offers serene isolation, ideal for those seeking a break from the world. Meanwhile, Gili Air strikes a balance, offering relaxation with a touch of vibrancy. No matter which island you choose, the Gili Islands promise beautiful beaches, friendly locals, and unforgettable memories. Make your choice, pack your bags, and get ready for an island adventure unlike any other.
