My Personal Opinion and Experience

As a female traveler, I cannot recommend Kefalonia enough. Throughout my visit, I always felt safe, whether walking alone at night in the dark or riding my scooter along the island’s narrow roads. Not once did I find myself in a situation that felt risky, whether it involved concerns about pickpocketing or interactions with locals. The warm and welcoming atmosphere made my time on the island truly enjoyable, and I never experienced any moments of discomfort or unease during my stay. Kefalonia is a destination where I felt completely at ease exploring its beauty, even as a solo female traveler.

Friendly Locals & Welcoming Culture

Kefalonia is one of the most memorable places I’ve visited, thanks to the incredible warmth and friendliness of its locals. Their genuine smiles and happy vibes are one of the highlights of my stay. I met so many wonderful people during my time on the island, each encounter making my experience even more special.

For now, Kefalonia is the only Greek island I’ve had the pleasure of visiting, so I can’t say for sure if this level of hospitality is common across all Greek islands. However, I suspect it might also have something to do with Kefalonia’s unique charm and the fact that it hasn’t yet been overwhelmed by mass tourism during the high season.

Greek Culture

Greek culture is deeply rooted in its rich history, blending ancient traditions with modern influences. Family plays a central role in Greek life, and hospitality, known as philoxenia, is a cherished value, with locals welcoming guests with warmth and generosity. From lively dances like the sirtaki to delicious Mediterranean dishes, Greek culture is full of vibrant traditions that make it truly special.

Safe and Convenient Transportation

Getting around Kefalonia is relatively easy, though it requires some planning due to the island’s size. Traveling from one side of the island to the other can take about an hour, depending on the route. Here are the most popular options for getting around Kefalonia:

1. Renting a Car, Scooter, or Quad Bike

This is by far the most recommended option. Renting your own vehicle provides the freedom to explore the island at your own pace without relying on public transportation or taxis.

I rented a scooter for a week, and it was the best decision I made. Scooters are ideal for solo travelers or couples, while cars or quad bikes are great for families or groups.

Where to Rent: There are plenty of rental shops across the island, particularly in Argostoli. Some of the most popular rental companies include Velox Rentals, Motoround-Kefalonia, JoyRide Kefalonia Airport Rent a Car and Unicorn Rentals.

Tips:

  • Book in advance, especially during the high season (June to August), to ensure availability.
  • An international driver’s license is required for renting vehicles in Greece. Be sure to bring this along with your regular driver’s license.
  • Always check the rental agreement for insurance coverage and road assistance details.

2. Public Transportation

Kefalonia has a basic public bus system operated by KTEL Kefalonia. It connects major areas, including the airport, Argostoli, Sami, and some popular beaches like Platis Gialos Beach.

Pros & Cons:

  • Affordable and reliable for short distances.
  • Ideal if you plan to stay around Argostoli or nearby beaches.
  • Limited routes and schedules.
  • Doesn’t cover all areas of the island.
  • Buses take longer than driving due to multiple stops.

If you’re planning to explore the entire island, public transportation is not the most efficient option.

3. Taxis

Taxis are available in popular areas such as the airport, Argostoli, Sami, and major tourist hubs. They are convenient for short rides when other options aren’t available.

Considerations:

  • Taxis can be costly, especially for long distances.
  • Always confirm the fare beforehand or ensure the meter is running to avoid overcharging.
  • Taxis are better suited for occasional use rather than relying on them for your entire trip.

4. Ferry Between Argostoli and Lixouri

Argostoli and Lixouri are two of the most popular destinations on the island, separated by a bay. Driving between them can take over an hour, but a convenient ferry service connects the two towns directly. The ferry is an excellent option for saving time and enjoying scenic views across the bay.

Schedule & Details:

  • In the summer: Ferries run every 30 minutes.
  • In the winter: Ferries run every hour.
  • Prices: €6 per car or €3 per passenger for a one-way trip.
  • The journey takes 20–25 minutes.

5. Traveling Between Islands

Kefalonia is well-connected to other Greek islands and mainland Greece by ferry or plane. It’s recommended to reserve your ferry or flight tickets in advance during the high season to secure your spot.

  • By Plane: Kefalonia Airport offers flights to and from Athens and other islands, especially during the summer season.
  • By Ferry: Multiple ferry services operate between Kefalonia and nearby islands, such as Ithaca and Zakynthos, as well as the mainland. Tickets can be purchased online or directly at “Lixouri Bus Station”, where ferries to Athens and other destinations are available.

Popular Ferry Companies:

  • Hellenic Seaways
  • Saronic Ferries
  • Aegean Flying Dolphins

Accommodation Options

As Kefalonia’s popularity grows, so does the variety of accommodation options. While hostels have yet to make an appearance on the island, there are plenty of Airbnbs and hotels available in the main tourist hotspots, catering to different budgets and preferences.

What About the Prices for Solo Travelers?

Kefalonia remains one of the lesser-known Greek islands, which helps keep accommodation prices more affordable compared to popular destinations like Santorini and Mykonos. Solo travelers will find a range of budget-friendly options, with some accommodations starting as low as $30 per night. This makes Kefalonia an excellent choice for those seeking a beautiful Greek getaway without breaking the bank.

You’re a Last Minute Traveler like I Am?

Having many options also provides flexibility, allowing you to easily change your plans if needed. If you arrive at a location and don’t feel entirely comfortable, it’s relatively simple to find alternative accommodations nearby. This flexibility gives peace of mind, knowing that you’re never stuck in one place and can always move to a safer or more suitable environment if necessary.

Rating Systems on the Accommodations Apps

Online platforms like Airbnb, and Booking.com offer a vast selection of lodgings with detailed reviews and ratings from previous guests. This transparency helps you make informed decisions depending on your priorities and wishes. You can read comments from travelers just like you. There is nothing more relatable than that.

What to Look Out For in Kefalonia

While Kefalonia is generally a safe destination for tourists, it’s always wise to stay cautious and informed. Here are some key safety considerations to keep in mind when visiting the island:

1. Insurance

If you’re planning to rent a scooter, car, or quad bike, ensure that your travel insurance covers road accidents. Kefalonia’s roads, while scenic, can be narrow and winding, with sharp turns and steep inclines. Even experienced drivers may find them challenging.

2. Pickpocketing and Theft

While Kefalonia is relatively safe compared to many other tourist destinations, petty theft and pickpocketing can still occur, particularly in crowded areas or at busy beaches. Beaches are especially vulnerable as people often leave their belongings unattended while swimming.

  • Avoid bringing expensive items like jewelry or high-end electronics to the beach.
  • If you’re exploring busy areas like Argostoli or Lixouri, carry a secure bag with zippers to keep away pickpockets.

3. Scams and Tourist Traps

Kefalonia is becoming more and more a popular tourist destination, and like many such places, there are occasional scams and overpriced services. Here’s what to watch out for:

Taxi Scams:

  • Always ensure the taxi meter is running before your journey begins if you haven’t prearranged a fare.
  • For longer trips or transfers, agree on a price beforehand to avoid misunderstandings.

Tour Booking Scams:

  • Stick to reputable tour companies such as GetYourGuide or Viator. These platforms offer verified reviews and clear pricing.
  • If booking tours in person, check credentials, and clarify the itinerary and price before paying.

Market Overpricing:

  • In local markets, vendors may start with inflated prices, especially in more tourist-heavy areas.
  • Compare prices between stalls and don’t hesitate to haggle—it’s part of the culture in Greece, and you can often negotiate a better deal.

4. Currency Exchange and Payment Tips

Currency exchanges can be tricky, but there are ways to avoid unnecessary fees and poor rates:

  • Use ATMs Wisely: ATMs are widespread in Kefalonia, and withdrawing cash is often the best way to get local currency. Choose ATMs affiliated with major banks and refuse the conversion rate offered at the machine. This ensures your local bank handles the currency exchange, often giving you a better rate.
  • Exchange Money Before Your Trip: If possible, exchange some cash at your local bank before traveling to Greece to avoid high fees at airport kiosks or tourist exchange counters.
  • Pay with Cards: Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Kefalonia, especially in restaurants and shops. However, it’s always good to carry some cash for smaller establishments or rural areas where cards may not be accepted.

Safety Tips

  • Bring a Padlock: If staying in hostels, carry a sturdy padlock for securing your belongings in provided lockers.
  • Carry a Personal Alarm: A small, loud personal alarm can deter attackers and attract attention in emergencies.
  • Stay Connected: Regularly update loved ones on your whereabouts and share your location via smartphone apps.
  • Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, leave immediately. Your safety is paramount.
  • Respect Local Culture: Dress modestly and follow local customs to blend in and avoid unwanted attention.
  • Avoid Flashing Valuables: Keep expensive items out of sight to reduce the risk of theft.
  • Secure Your Valuables: Use a crossbody bag with a zipper, worn in front, to keep your essentials safe.
  • Keep Emergency Numbers Handy: Save local emergency numbers in your phone and write them down as a backup.
  • Keep Your Phone Charged: Carry a power bank to ensure your phone is always charged.
  • Learn Basic Phrases: Know essential phrases in the local language for emergencies and basic communication.
  • Get Travel Insurance: Ensure your insurance covers medical emergencies, theft, and trip cancellations.

Make Friends Before & During Your Trip

Traveling solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone the entire time—unless, of course, that’s what you prefer, which is perfectly okay too. Both Jez and I (Léo) have made plenty of friends during our travels, even when we weren’t together. Thanks to the power of social media, it’s easier than ever to connect with fellow travelers and make new friends along the way. Here’s our take on the best and easiest way to do so:

Facebook Groups

Facebook groups are a fantastic resource for meeting other travelers. One of our favorites is called “The Female Solo Traveler Network.” Don’t hesitate to post in these groups, ask for advice, or suggest meeting up with others. You might find someone to join you for part of your trip or even plan an entire journey together! However, always be cautious of potential scams—it’s a good idea to ask for a video call to verify the person’s identity before making any concrete plans.
