Do the Volcano Boarding in León

Volcano boarding is arguably the most popular adventure activity in Nicaragua. It’s an absolute must for thrill-seekers visiting León.

Price: Between 1,800 córdobas (70$ CAD) and 2,500 córdobas (97$ CAD), depending on the tour operator and inclusions.

Visit the Cathedral of León

As impressive as the interior of the cathedral is—being the largest in the country—nothing compares to its rooftop. The breathtaking panoramic view makes the steep climb completely worth it.

Price: Entry to the cathedral is free. Access to the rooftop costs 115 córdobas per person (4.50$ CAD).

At what time does the León Cathedral open?

León Cathedral opens everyday at 9:30 AM  but see below full details of the opening hours. The rooftop is open all day but make sure to buy your tickets before 5 PM, as that’s the last entry time.

How to Get to the Rooftop of León Cathedral:

1. Go to the back of the cathedral, outside, facing Mercado Central. Look for a small door leading into the church.
2. Walk through the passage until you reach a gated area. Someone inside will sell you a ticket for the rooftop.
3. Once you have your ticket, head toward the left side of the cathedral (when facing it from the market). Look for another small door with a gate.
4. If no one is there, wait a few minutes—visitors are allowed up in intervals.
5. You’ll have 30 minutes to explore the rooftop and take incredible photos. Enjoy the view!

P.S. If you’re planning to catch the sunset from the rooftop of León Cathedral, keep in mind that they might ask you to leave before the sun actually sets—that’s what happened to us in February 2025.

Exploring a market is always a must when visiting a new city. León’s Central Market has everything you could need—from local food stands and fresh fruits to clothing, spices, jewelry, and more. You’ll likely find something you didn’t even know you wanted.

Tips: Bring cash, as credit cards are rarely accepted, and don’t hesitate to negotiate prices.

1. Where to catch the bus: The bus to Las Peñitas leaves from Sutiava Market (Mercado Sutiava) in León.

2. Cost: A one-way bus ticket costs about 15–20 córdobas (0.60$–0.75$ CAD).

3. Schedule & Frequency:

• The buses run every 30–45 minutes from around 5:30 AM to 6:30 PM.
• However, schedules are unpredictable, and buses typically leave when full.
• The ride takes approximately 30–40 minutes.
• The bus ends its route in Las Peñitas, so you can stay on until the last stop.

4. Alternative Transport:

Hike Volcano Telica

For adventure seekers, hiking Telica Volcano is an unforgettable experience. This active volcano stands at 1,061 meters (3,481 feet) and offers breathtaking sunset views and a glowing lava crater.

What to Expect on the Telica Volcano Hike:

• Duration: The hike takes about 4-7 hours round-trip, depending on your pace.
• Difficulty Level: Moderate; some steep sections, but manageable for most hikers.
• The Reward: At the summit, you’ll get jaw-dropping views of lava bubbling inside the crater, plus a stunning sunset over the Nicaraguan countryside.
• Wildlife & Scenery: Along the way, keep an eye out for monkeys, tropical birds, and lush landscapes.

Pro Tips:

• Go with a Guide: Many tour companies in León offer sunset hikes with transportation, making it a stress-free experience. Hiking the volcano with a guide is also the only way to be able to sleep overnight and watch the sunset from the top of the volcano.
• Wear Proper Gear: Sturdy shoes, a flashlight, and a light jacket (it can get chilly at the top).
• Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water, as the hike can get hot, especially in the afternoon.

How to Get There

• Most tours include transportation but it is also possible to hike Telica on your own. You can take a taxi to the trailhead located close to the San Jacinto village.

Personal Experience

We heard such great feedback about the Telica Volcano and the incredible experience of standing at the edge of its lava crater. Unfortunately, just a few days before we arrived in León, the volcano became active, and all activities were suspended. It remained closed for a while, so we recommend checking with tour operators in advance to ensure you can hike and fully experience Telica.
