Do the Volcano Boarding in León
Volcano boarding is arguably the most popular adventure activity in Nicaragua. It’s an absolute must for thrill-seekers visiting León.
For backpackers who enjoy a lively atmosphere and meeting fellow travelers, Bigfoot Hostel is the top choice for this experience.
For those looking for a more relaxed vibe, we booked our tour through GetYourGuide with Nica Up Travel, a well-reviewed company. Another highly recommended company is Volcano Day.
Price: Between 1,800 córdobas (70$ CAD) and 2,500 córdobas (97$ CAD), depending on the tour operator and inclusions.

2
Visit the Cathedral of León
As impressive as the interior of the cathedral is—being the largest in the country—nothing compares to its rooftop. The breathtaking panoramic view makes the steep climb completely worth it.
Price: Entry to the cathedral is free. Access to the rooftop costs 115 córdobas per person (4.50$ CAD).
Location: Asilo de Ancianos, NIC-14, León, Nicaragua
At what time does the León Cathedral open?
León Cathedral opens everyday at 9:30 AM but see below full details of the opening hours. The rooftop is open all day but make sure to buy your tickets before 5 PM, as that’s the last entry time.
Opening Hours Details of León Cathedral
- Monday to Saturday ; 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM & 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM
- Sunday & Holidays ; 9:30 AM – 2:00 PM
How to Get to the Rooftop of León Cathedral:
- Go to the back of the cathedral, outside, facing Mercado Central. Look for a small door leading into the church.
- Walk through the passage until you reach a gated area. Someone inside will sell you a ticket for the rooftop.
- Once you have your ticket, head toward the left side of the cathedral (when facing it from the market). Look for another small door with a gate.
- If no one is there, wait a few minutes—visitors are allowed up in intervals.
- You’ll have 30 minutes to explore the rooftop and take incredible photos. Enjoy the view!
P.S. If you’re planning to catch the sunset from the rooftop of León Cathedral, keep in mind that they might ask you to leave before the sun actually sets—that’s what happened to us in February 2025.

3
Explore the Mercado Central of León
Exploring a market is always a must when visiting a new city. León’s Central Market has everything you could need—from local food stands and fresh fruits to clothing, spices, jewelry, and more. You’ll likely find something you didn’t even know you wanted.
Tips: Bring cash, as credit cards are rarely accepted, and don’t hesitate to negotiate prices.
Location: The Central Market is located directly behind the Cathedral.

Check Out the Church of the Recollection
This yellow church is easy to spot while walking through the center of León. Unfortunately, we could only take pictures of the exterior, as the inside was closed. From what I’ve read online, it is rarely open to visitors.
It may not be the most exciting or time-consuming activity, but stopping by for a few minutes to admire the architecture and take some photos is definitely worthwhile.
Location: C4QF+25H, León, Nicaragua
5
Take a Day Trip to Las Penitas
Just 30 minutes from León, Las Peñitas is a charming beach town on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast. Known for its golden sands, consistent waves, and relaxed vibe, it’s the perfect escape from the city’s heat for a day trip.
What to Do in Las Peñitas:
- Surfing & Swimming: The waves here are great for beginner and intermediate surfers, with board rentals and lessons available.
- Explore Isla Juan Venado: Take a boat tour through this stunning nature reserve, home to mangroves, birds, and even crocodiles.
- Enjoy Fresh Seafood: Try a beachfront restaurant for fresh ceviche, grilled fish, and a cold Toña beer while watching the sunset.
- Relax on the Beach: Whether you bring a book or take a nap in a hammock, Las Peñitas is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the sun.
How to Get to Las Peñitas from León:
Taking the local bus from León to Las Peñitas is the most budget-friendly way to travel. Here’s everything you need to know:
1. Where to catch the bus: The bus to Las Peñitas leaves from Sutiava Market (Mercado Sutiava) in León.
2. Cost: A one-way bus ticket costs about 15–20 córdobas (0.60$–0.75$ CAD).
3. Schedule & Frequency:
- The buses run every 30–45 minutes from around 5:30 AM to 6:30 PM.
- However, schedules are unpredictable, and buses typically leave when full.
- The ride takes approximately 30–40 minutes.
- The bus ends its route in Las Peñitas, so you can stay on until the last stop.
4. Alternative Transport:
- If you miss the last bus or prefer more flexibility, taxis and moto-taxis are available for 10$–20$ CAD one way depending on the availability and time of the day. Use the In-Drive app for the best taxi fare!

Enjoy an afternoon at Coco Calala
Coco Calala was undoubtedly one of the best places to eat in León. We tried a few other restaurants, but kept returning there because the food was outstanding—probably the best vegetarian meals I’ve ever had. The prices were surprisingly lower than most restaurants in the region, and the atmosphere was fantastic.
What makes it an activity and not just a typical restaurant?
One of its perks is the pool, which you can enjoy for free when you order a drink or a dish. If you don’t make a purchase, pool access costs 110 Córdoba (about $4.50 CAD).

7
Hike Volcano Telica
For adventure seekers, hiking Telica Volcano is an unforgettable experience. This active volcano stands at 1,061 meters (3,481 feet) and offers breathtaking sunset views and a glowing lava crater.
What to Expect on the Telica Volcano Hike:
- Duration: The hike takes about 4-7 hours round-trip, depending on your pace.
- Difficulty Level: Moderate; some steep sections, but manageable for most hikers.
- The Reward: At the summit, you’ll get jaw-dropping views of lava bubbling inside the crater, plus a stunning sunset over the Nicaraguan countryside.
- Wildlife & Scenery: Along the way, keep an eye out for monkeys, tropical birds, and lush landscapes.
Pro Tips:
- Go with a Guide: Many tour companies in León offer sunset hikes with transportation, making it a stress-free experience. Hiking the volcano with a guide is also the only way to be able to sleep overnight and watch the sunset from the top of the volcano.
- Wear Proper Gear: Sturdy shoes, a flashlight, and a light jacket (it can get chilly at the top).
- Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water, as the hike can get hot, especially in the afternoon.
How to Get There
- Most tours include transportation but it is also possible to hike Telica on your own. You can take a taxi to the trailhead located close to the San Jacinto village.
Personal Experience
We heard such great feedback about the Telica Volcano and the incredible experience of standing at the edge of its lava crater. Unfortunately, just a few days before we arrived in León, the volcano became active, and all activities were suspended. It remained closed for a while, so we recommend checking with tour operators in advance to ensure you can hike and fully experience Telica.
Final Thoughts
León is a city that blends history, adventure, and relaxation. Whether you’re racing down a volcano, soaking up the colonial charm, or unwinding on the beach, there’s something here for every type of traveler.
While it may not be packed with tourist attractions, its raw authenticity and vibrant energy make it a must-visit destination in Nicaragua!
