Ultimate Big Sur Itinerary: Best One-Day Road Trip Stops

Big Sur is often described as one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, and after visiting, I couldn’t agree more. This 90-mile stretch of rugged coastline between Carmel and San Simeon will take your breath away with its dramatic cliffs, towering redwoods, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, this one-day itinerary will guide you through the must-see highlights that will leave you in awe of California’s natural beauty.

Note: You’ll be driving on Highway 1 for the entire trip. When we went, a section of the highway in the south was closed, so we started from the north in Monterey and worked our way south. You can reverse the route if starting from the south works better for you.

1

Bixby Creek Bridge

The Bixby Creek Bridge is one of the most iconic sights along the Big Sur coastline, and it’s a must-see on your trip. This stunning bridge spans a deep canyon, with the Pacific Ocean providing a dramatic backdrop.

Tips for Visiting:

  • Arrive early: The bridge is one of the most photographed spots on the coast, and fog can roll in quickly, especially later in the day. Morning visits usually provide clearer views.
  • Parking: There are pull outs on both sides of the road, but they can get crowded, especially during peak tourist season, so plan accordingly.

Best Time to Visit: Spring and early summer offer clear skies, but fall often provides the most consistently clear weather, as fog is less frequent.

2

McWay Falls

McWay Falls is one of the most beautiful and photographed waterfalls on the California coast. Located in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, this waterfall flows directly into the ocean, creating a surreal and picturesque scene.

Tips for Visiting:

  • Viewpoints: You can see McWay Falls directly from Highway 1, but I recommend taking the short trail from the parking area for a better vantage point. The trail is easy and offers stunning perspectives of the waterfall and the surrounding cliffs.
  • Access: Keep in mind that access to the beach below the falls is prohibited to protect its natural beauty, so plan on enjoying the views from the trail and viewpoints.

Parking: The state park has parking available, but it can fill up fast during peak hours. Try to arrive early in the day to secure a spot.

Stop Anywhere Along Highway 1

One of the best parts of driving along Highway 1 is the countless opportunities to pull over and take in the views. Known as “the greatest meeting of land and water,” the Big Sur coastline offers panoramic vistas at nearly every turn. Take advantage of the numerous pullouts to stop, explore, and admire the stunning scenery.

Tips for Stopping:

  • Explore Different Viewpoints: Some pullouts offer easy access to rocky cliffs, beaches, and even short trails. Make sure to take your time and explore the coastline, as each stop offers something unique.
  • Be Safe: Always ensure you’re pulling over at designated viewpoints and off the road completely to avoid traffic hazards.

Best Spots: Keep an eye out for lesser-known spots like Garrapata State Park and Pfeiffer Beach if you have extra time, both offering stunning views and photo opportunities.

Additional Stops if You Have More Time

If you have extra time or want to explore further, consider adding these bonus stops to your itinerary:

Pfeiffer Beach: Famous for its unique purple sand and stunning rock formations, this beach is a hidden gem worth visiting. Be aware that the road leading to it is narrow, and parking is limited, so plan accordingly.

Point Sur Lighthouse: This historic lighthouse offers guided tours and a chance to learn about the maritime history of the area. It’s also a great spot for panoramic views of the coastline.

Practical Information for Your Trip

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Big Sur is typically in the fall (September to November) when the fog is less frequent, and the weather is mild. Spring is also a great time to visit, with blooming wildflowers and clear skies.

What to Pack

  • Layers of clothing: The weather can be unpredictable, with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. A jacket or sweater is a good idea.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: Even on foggy days, the sun can break through and be intense, so protect your skin and eyes.
  • Water and snacks: There are limited places to stop for food and drinks along the way, so make sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks for your journey.
  • Camera: The views along Highway 1 are incredible, so don’t forget to bring a camera to capture the stunning landscapes.

Cell Service and Navigation

Keep in mind that cell service is spotty throughout much of Big Sur, so it’s best to download maps or have printed directions before starting your trip.

Gas Stations

Gas stations are few and far between along this stretch of Highway 1, so be sure to fill up your tank before you start your journey. Monterey and Carmel are good places to fuel up.
