Top Destinations in Costa Rica: Ultimate Places to Stay and Explore

I spent three weeks in Costa Rica, and it quickly became one of my favorite travel experiences. Instead of rushing from place to place, I chose to take my time and fully immerse myself in each city I visited, which is why I focused on a select few destinations.

From stunning beaches to lush rainforests and vibrant local culture, Costa Rica has something for every type of traveler. In this guide, I’ll share my honest reviews of the places I explored, offering tips and insights to help you plan your own adventure—whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or a mix of both.

  1. Tamarindo – Perfect to enjoy the beaches
  2. Monteverde – Great for outdoor activities
  3. La Fortuna – So many things to do, my favorite city
  4. San Jose  – The capital

Tamarindo

If you’re seeking a laid-back vibe, warm waters, and a mix of relaxation and activities, Tamarindo is the place to go.

  • Perfect Beach Destination: The warm, calm waters of Tamarindo are ideal for swimming, floating, and relaxing by the sea. Whether you’re looking to soak up the sun or cool off in the ocean, the beach is the main attraction.
  • Great Surfing Spot: Tamarindo is a fantastic place for beginner surfers. The town offers plenty of surf schools, and the waves are perfect for newcomers. Walk around the center to find the best deals on lessons.
  • Breathtaking Sunsets: The sunsets in Tamarindo are spectacular, with the sky lighting up in vibrant colors every evening. It’s the perfect way to end your day.

Best Time to Visit: December to April (dry season).

How to Get There: Tamarindo is about a 1-hour drive from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (Liberia). Public transportation is available and convenient for reaching the town quickly.

Where to Stay: Tamarindo offers a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly hostels to mid-range hotels and luxury beachfront resorts.

Budget Tip: Tamarindo can be pricier due to its popularity. Save money by eating at local sodas (traditional Costa Rican restaurants) instead of tourist spots.

Monteverde

Monteverde is known for its cloud forests and rich biodiversity, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

  • Stunning Scenic Journey: The drive to Monteverde offers breathtaking views of Costa Rica’s mountainous landscapes. Though the journey is long—about nine hours from Tamarindo by public transport—the scenery makes it worth the trip.
  • Incredible Sunsets: Monteverde has some of the most beautiful sunsets in Costa Rica. Head to Mirador El Milano for the best views, where the $2 USD entry fee is well worth it for the panoramic views.
  • Free Activities: Monteverde offers several free nature activities, perfect for budget travelers. Check out the Ficus Tree Bridge and Cerro Plano Viewpoint for stunning views of the cloud forests.
  • Perfect for Short Stays: If you’re on a budget, Monteverde is ideal for a two-day visit. While many activities are pricey, the free options will keep you entertained without stretching your budget.

Best Time to Visit: December to April (dry season) for the best weather, but the green season from May to November offers fewer crowds and lush landscapes.

How to Get There: Monteverde is about a 4-7 hour drive from both San José and Liberia airports. You can take a shuttle, bus, or rent a car to get there.

Where to Stay: Monteverde offers a range of accommodations, from cozy eco-lodges and hostels to luxury mountain retreats, many with beautiful views of the cloud forest.

Budget Tip: To save money, consider booking guided tours with group discounts instead of private ones.

La Fortuna

La Fortuna is a small town nestled in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano, known for its abundant adventure activities.

  • A Variety of Free Activities: La Fortuna offers plenty of free attractions, including El Salto (a local swimming spot), the Arenal Volcano Trail to Cerro Chato, and Cataratas Escondidas, a hidden waterfall. You can also relax in the natural hot springs or explore Angelina Garden, all without breaking the bank.
  • Exploring by Scooter: Renting a scooter is a great way to get around La Fortuna. I highly recommend La Fortuna Rentals for affordability and friendly service.
  • Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges: One of the most popular activities in La Fortuna is the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges. Start your walk at 6 a.m. to avoid the crowds and maximize your chances of spotting wildlife.

Best Time to Visit: December to April (dry season, ideal for outdoor activities and volcano views).

How to Get There: La Fortuna is about a 4-hour drive from San José’s Juan Santamaría International Airport, with shuttle, bus, and car rental options available.

Where to Stay: La Fortuna offers a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly hostels to mid-range hotels, as well as luxury eco-lodges near the Arenal Volcano.

San Jose

San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, is often a necessary stop for travelers due to its proximity to the main international airport. However, many visitors, including myself, find it lacks the charm and attractions that other parts of the country offer.

  • Minimal Time Needed: Compared to other regions in Costa Rica, San Jose has fewer must-see attractions, so it’s best to limit your stay to one night.
  • Urban Overload: The bustling, urban environment of San Jose may not appeal to those seeking the country’s natural beauty and tranquility.
  • Limited Attractions: While it does have some cultural sites, such as museums and parks, it doesn’t offer the same experiences found elsewhere in the country.

Best Time to Visit: April to October (dry season, mild weather).

How to Get There: San Jose is accessible via Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport, located just a 10-minute drive from downtown.

Where to Stay: San Jose offers a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly chain hotels to mid-range options and luxury boutique hotels in the downtown area.

Budget Tip: Save money by dining at local taquerias or food trucks instead of pricier restaurants.
