Rent a Scooter and Discover Southern Lombok at Your Own Pace
If there’s one activity that defines a trip to Kuta Lombok, it’s exploring the island by scooter.
Unlike many beach destinations where the main attractions are concentrated in one area, southern Lombok is made up of dozens of beaches, viewpoints, cafés, and small villages connected by scenic coastal roads.
Having your own transportation gives you the freedom to discover them at your own pace.
One of our favorite memories from Lombok wasn’t a specific attraction, it was simply the drive itself.
The roads around Kuta are surprisingly well maintained, making scooter travel accessible even for visitors with limited riding experience. Traffic is light compared to Bali, and distances between attractions are short, meaning you’ll spend more time exploring than driving.
Scooter Rental Prices
Scooters are available from countless rental shops throughout Kuta, and many accommodations can arrange one directly for guests.
Average daily prices:
- 80,000-120,000 IDR (around $6-10 CAD) per day for a standard automatic scooter
- For a full week the rate per day is often negotiable
Helmets are usually included in the rental price.
Where to Rent a Scooter
Some of the easiest options include:
- Directly through your hotel or guesthouse
- Local rental shops along Jalan Pariwisata
- Delivery services that bring the scooter directly to your accommodation
We really recommend asking about availability and pricing in advance. Many rental shops have a website, or whatsapp number that you can reach.
Principal advice : Before leaving, take a few minutes to inspect the brakes, lights, tires, and fuel level, and don’t hesitate to take photos of any existing scratches.
More Tips for Driving in Lombok
- Drive on the left-hand side of the road.
- Wear a helmet, even for short distances.
- Download offline Google Maps before leaving your hotel.
- Fill up your tank before heading toward more remote beaches.
- Avoid driving after dark on unfamiliar roads, as some coastal routes have limited lighting.
2
Go Beach Hopping: Discover the Most Beautiful Beaches Around Kuta Lombok
One of the biggest reasons travelers fall in love with Kuta Lombok is simple: the beaches.
Unlike many destinations where you’ll spend the day at a single beach, beach hopping is part of the experience in southern Lombok.
Within a 10 to 30-minute scooter ride from town, you’ll find dozens of beaches, each with its own personality.
If you’re renting a scooter (which we highly recommend), it’s easy to visit two or three beaches in a single day while stopping at scenic viewpoints along the coast.
Tanjung Aan Beach
This long stretch of soft white sand and turquoise water is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Lombok.

While the beach itself is beautiful, the real highlight is Bukit Seger, the grassy hill overlooking the coastline.
A short walk to the top rewards you with sweeping views of the surrounding beaches, turquoise bays, and rolling hills that have become one of southern Lombok’s signature landscapes.

Watch the Sunset at Josie Sunset Corner
If there’s one place that perfectly captures the laid-back atmosphere of Kuta Lombok, it’s Josie Sunset Corner.
Perched on the cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean, this scenic viewpoint has quickly become one of the most popular places to watch the sunset in southern Lombok.
More Than Just a Viewpoint
Unlike many scenic lookouts, Josie Sunset Corner also has a café and bar where you can order drinks, coffee, fresh juices, cocktails, and some food while waiting for sunset.
It’s common for visitors to arrive an hour or two before sunset, grab a seat overlooking the ocean, and stay well after the sun has disappeared.
The atmosphere becomes especially lively during the evening, with music playing in the background and travelers sharing stories.
Entrance Fee & Prices
One of the best things about Josie Sunset Corner is that there is no entrance fee.
Instead, visitors simply order food or drinks if they’d like to enjoy the seating area.
Average prices:
- Fresh juices: 30,000-45,000 IDR (around $2-4 CAD)
- Cocktails: 70,000-120,000 IDR (around $5-9 CAD)
- Food : 60,000-120,000 IDR (around $5-10 CAD)
Even if you only stop for a drink, it’s well worth spending an hour here to enjoy the scenery.

Kuta Lombok Nightlife: Bars & Live Music
While Kuta Lombok is known for its laid-back beach lifestyle and early sunsets, the town doesn’t completely shut down after dark. In fact, one of the most surprising things for many travelers is just how social and lively the evenings can be here.
Nightlife in Kuta isn’t about massive clubs or late-night chaos. Instead, it’s mostly centered around beach bars, live music, bonfires, and relaxed gatherings where travelers from all over the world end their day together.
The Best Bars in Kuta Lombok
Most of Kuta’s nightlife is concentrated around the main streets and beach areas, with a handful of popular spots that rotate between live music, DJ sets, and social evenings.
1. The Bus Bar
One of the most iconic nightlife spots in Kuta, The Bus Bar is built around a converted bus and is known for its lively, social atmosphere.
It’s a popular meeting point for backpackers and surfers, especially in the early evening. Expect affordable drinks, music, and a mix of travelers from around the world.
2. Surfers Bar
A classic in Kuta’s nightlife scene, Surfers Bar is known for live music, open-air seating, and a relaxed beach-town energy.
It’s one of the easiest places to spend an entire evening without realizing how much time has passed. Music usually starts early, and the crowd builds naturally throughout the night.
3. Curfew
If you’re looking for something slightly more modern, Curfew offers a more structured restaurant experience with DJs, themed nights, and a more polished setting compared to other beach bars in town.
It attracts a mix of travelers and expats, especially later in the evening.
4. La Cabana
Located closer to the beach, La Cabana is a great spot for sunset drinks that often transitions into a relaxed evening hangout.
It’s less chaotic than some of the other bars, making it a good option if you want nightlife without the party intensity.
5. Turtle Rave (every wednesday)
This party takes place every Wednesday from 10:00 PM until sunrise at Serenting Beach.
With DJs spinning music, your feet in the sand, and a drink in hand, it offers a completely different atmosphere from the more laid-back, social vibe of the other venues mentioned above.
You’ll need to purchase a ticket to attend, but prices are generally very affordable.
For the latest ticket prices and event updates, check out their WhatsApp group, the invitation link can be found in their Instagram bio.

Visit Sade Village: A Deep Dive Into Sasak Culture in Lombok
Just a short drive from Kuta Lombok, you’ll find one of the most important cultural experiences in southern Lombok: Sade Village (Desa Sade).
This traditional Sasak village offers a rare opportunity to step inside the daily life, customs, and history of the indigenous people of Lombok.
While many parts of the island are now shaped by tourism, Sade has preserved much of its traditional architecture and cultural identity, making it one of the most visited cultural attractions in the region.
Unlike a museum or staged performance, Sade Village is a living community where families still follow ancestral traditions, build their homes in the traditional way, and share their culture directly with visitors.
What to Expect When Visiting Sade Village
Visiting Sade Village usually starts with a local guide welcoming you into the community. The experience is informal and interactive.
You’re encouraged to walk through the village by yourself or with a local guide that will teach you about Sasak traditions, architecture, and daily life.
As you walk through the village, guides often explain:
- How houses are built and maintained
- Traditional Sasak marriage customs
- Local farming and weaving practices
- The role of family and community in daily life
Our opinion: Visiting the village accompanied by a local guide is 100% the best option. Visiting by yourself is an activity like any other, while visiting with a guide is a complete cultural experience like no other!
Cultural Experience: Coffee, Cigarettes & Traditions
One of the highlights of our visit was how interactive the experience felt.
During the tour, locals invited us to:
- Learn how to make cotton thread from raw cotton
- Taste traditional Lombok coffee
- Observe how they roll their own handmade cigarettes
- Learn stories passed down through generations
- Understand the meaning behind certain rituals and traditions
These moments give the visit a very personal feel. It’s not just about observing culture, it’s about being welcomed into it, even if just briefly.
Entrance Fee & How It Works
One of the unique aspects of Sade Village is that there is no fixed entrance fee.
Instead, the visit works on a voluntary contribution system, where visitors are encouraged to support the community through donations or by purchasing handmade crafts.
Typical contributions:
- Small donation at the entrance
- Buying woven textiles or handicrafts made by locals
Visiting with a guide
Our guide explained that the tour also operates on a voluntary contribution basis, meaning there is no fixed price. According to him, most visitors typically tip around 100,000 IDR ($8 CAD) per person at the end of the tour. We had a fantastic experience, so we chose to give our guide 150,000 IDR ($12 CAD) as a thank-you for his time and knowledge.
Location & How to Get There
Sade Village is located just a short drive from Kuta Lombok, making it an easy half-day cultural stop between beach visits or waterfall excursions.
Distance from Kuta Lombok: ~15-20 minutes
- Easily accessible by scooter or car
- Parking available at the entrance

Visit Benang Kelambu & Benang Stokel Waterfalls: A Scenic Jungle Day Trip from Kuta Lombok
Located in the lush hills of central Lombok, in Aik Berik Village, Benang Kelambu and Benang Stokel Waterfalls are often visited together and make for one of the most popular day trips from Kuta.
How Far Are the Waterfalls from Kuta Lombok?
The waterfalls are located approximately 55-60 km (34-37 miles) from Kuta Lombok.
Expect the drive to take around 1.5 to 2 hours each way, depending on traffic and road conditions.
The route is mostly paved and easy to follow.
Many visitors choose to:
- Rent a scooter for the day
- Hire a private driver
- Join an organized tour from Kuta
While renting a scooter gives you the most flexibility, there is one important thing to know before you go.
Getting to the Waterfalls: What You Should Know
Although the drive from Kuta is relatively straightforward, the final descent to the waterfall entrance is extremely steep.
Once you arrive at the parking area, the road becomes much narrower and drops sharply downhill. While experienced scooter riders may feel comfortable driving it themselves, carrying two people on one scooter can make the descent significantly more difficult.
During our visit, one of our friends actually lost control and tipped over on the way down. Thankfully, she wasn’t injured, but it was a good reminder that this section of the road deserves extra caution.
Fortunately, local guides are usually waiting near the parking area and are happy to help visitors who don’t feel comfortable riding down themselves.
One of us was able to ride down on the back of a guide’s scooter which made the descent much less stressful and felt like the safest option.
Our Tip: If you’re riding a scooter, we strongly recommend having only one person per scooter for the final descent whenever possible. The extra weight makes the steep road much harder to control.
Can You Pay a Guide to Ride You Down?
Yes. If you’re not confident riding the final section yourself, local guides are often available to help transport visitors between the parking area and the entrance on their own scooters.
Prices can vary depending on the season and availability, but offering a small tip or negotiated fee is common and well worth it if it helps you feel more comfortable.
Entrance Fees, Tour Options & What to Expect
Once you arrive at the entrance to the Benang Kelambu Waterfall area in Aik Berik Village, you’ll notice that visiting the waterfalls isn’t as simple as purchasing a single entrance ticket.
The site is home to four different waterfalls, with Benang Kelambu and Benang Stokel being the two most popular.
Visitors can choose between several tour packages depending on how much time they have and how much they want to explore.
The available packages typically include:
- Visiting the 2 main waterfalls (Benang Kelambu & Benang Stokel)
- Visiting all 4 waterfalls, including two quieter and lesser-known falls
- Options with or without a local guide (availability may vary)
Rather than charging one fixed entrance fee, prices depend on several factors, including the package you choose and the size of your group.
In general, you can expect to pay between 70,000 and 150,000 IDR (around $5-12 CAD) per person, with larger groups usually benefiting from lower per-person rates.
Good to know: Prices are subject to change, so it’s best to bring cash and confirm the available packages when you arrive.
Opening Hours
Daily: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Book a Tour to Make Your Life Easier
This activity has many aspects that make booking a tour the easiest and probably safest option.
If we were to visit this site again, we wouldn’t risk driving in these poor roads conditions + we would prefer having a guide that brings us to lesser known waterfalls.
We always use Get Your Guide to book our tours. It has amazing service and is very easy to use.
A tour like this one includes entrance fees, your 1.5 hours (both ways) transportation to the village, a guide that accompanies you the whole time, and even some little bonus aspects like a fresh coconut.
In our opinion: it is extremely worth it!

Bukit Merese: The Best Sunset Viewpoint in Kuta Lombok
If there’s one place that consistently appears on postcards, travel blogs, and Instagram feeds from Lombok, it’s Bukit Merese.
Located just a few minutes from Tanjung Aan Beach, this rolling green hill offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in southern Lombok. From the top, you get a full 360-degree perspective of the coastline, turquoise bays, rugged cliffs, and endless ocean stretching toward the horizon.
What makes Bukit Merese so special is its simplicity. There are no buildings, no cafés, and no structures competing for attention, just open grass hills and one of the most beautiful natural viewpoints in Kuta Lombok.
What the Experience Feels Like
The hike up Bukit Merese is short and accessible, taking around 10-15 minutes depending on your pace. The trail is easy to follow, and as you climb higher, the view expands quickly behind you.
At the top, the landscape opens completely. On one side, you’ll see the curved coastline of Tanjung Aan Beach and its turquoise waters. On the other, small hidden coves and rugged cliffs stretch toward the horizon.
Entrance Fee & Access
- Entrance fee: Free
- Parking: ~5,000-10,000 IDR for scooters (less than $1 CAD)
- Distance from Kuta: 10-15 minutes

If there’s one thing that has helped put Kuta Lombok on the global travel map, it’s surfing.
Southern Lombok is home to some of the most consistent waves in Indonesia, attracting surfers from around the world.
Even if you’ve never surfed before, Kuta is one of the best places in Southeast Asia to learn.
And if you’re already experienced, you’ll find powerful waves just beyond the main beaches that offer a completely different level of surf.
Selong Belanak: The Best Beach for Beginners
If you’re new to surfing, Selong Belanak Beach is where your experience will likely begin.
This wide, curved bay has long, gentle waves that break softly onto the sand, making it one of the safest and most beginner-friendly surf spots in Indonesia. Dozens of local surf schools line the beach every day, offering lessons for all levels.
Mawi Beach: For Intermediate & Advanced Surfers
Just a short ride from Kuta, Mawi Beach is a completely different surf experience.
Unlike Selong Belanak’s soft waves, Mawi is known for its powerful reef breaks, stronger currents, and more challenging conditions. This is where more experienced surfers come to chase bigger, faster waves in a more rugged coastal setting.
Cost of Surfing in Kuta Lombok
Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect:
- Beginner surf lesson: 150,000 – 250,000 IDR (around $12-20 CAD)

Best Day Trip from Kuta Lombok: The Secret Gilis
If you have extra time in your itinerary, this day trip is worth it.
One of the most underrated day trips from Kuta is a visit to the Secret Gilis, a small group of islands located off the southwest coast of Lombok.
Unlike the more famous Gili Islands near Bali, these islands remain quiet, less developed, and much more relaxed. There are no party scenes here, just clear water, coral reefs, and small stretches of white sand surrounded by turquoise sea.
Most travelers visit three islands in one trip:
- Gili Nanggu
- Gili Sudak
- Gili Kedis
It’s one of the few places where you can still experience:
- Empty beaches
- Clear snorkeling reefs
- Quiet island landscapes
- A full-day escape from crowds
