Located near Dubai Creek, Deira is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and offers a charming mix of history and modernity.
Why Deira?
Deira is home to affordable hotels and guesthouses, with nightly rates starting as low as $40–$50 USD. It’s also conveniently located near metro stations and some of Dubai’s iconic souks, like the Gold Souk and Spice Souk.
Personal Recommendation:
We stayed at the Mercure Dubai Deira, and it exceeded our expectations in every way. With an impressive 4.7 stars on Google and over 1,020 reviews, this hotel truly stands out for its amenities and location.
The highlight of our stay was the rooftop pool, offering stunning views of the city skyline, including the iconic Burj Khalifa. We also loved the rooftop bar, where we enjoyed drinks while watching the sunset and playing card games with friends.
The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, making us feel right at home. Plus, the location couldn’t be more convenient—the Gold Souk Metro Station is just a 2-minute walk away, making it easy to explore the city. The surrounding area is calm, clean, and perfect for a relaxing stay.
Honestly, I can’t recommend the Mercure Dubai Deira enough. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Dubai, and I’d happily stay there again!

One of the best ways to save money in Dubai is to skip taxis and use the Dubai Metro instead. This mode of public transport is not only efficient, clean, and affordable, but it’s also a great way to get around the city’s major attractions.
Why Choose the Metro?
The Dubai Metro connects most of the city’s key landmarks, including the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and Dubai Marina. With fares starting at just 3 AED ($0.80 USD) per ride, it’s one of the most economical and convenient ways to explore Dubai. Plus, the metro is air-conditioned, modern, and offers a comfortable ride.
My Recommendation: If you’re staying in Dubai for a couple of days, I highly recommend getting a Nol Card, a prepaid card that works across all public transportation, including the metro, buses, and water taxis. For extended stays, the 7-day Nol Card is a fantastic option:
- Cost:
- 110 AED for unlimited travel across all three zones for seven days.
- +25 AED for card activation.
- Total: 135 AED (~$52 CAD).
This is an incredibly affordable choice, especially considering the size of Dubai and the metro’s extensive reach.

- Cleanliness: Dubai’s public transportation system is spotless and well-maintained.

- Buses: Dubai’s bus network is extensive and budget-friendly.
- Water Taxis (Abra): For a traditional experience, take an abra across Dubai Creek for just 1 AED ($0.27 USD).

- Bestoon Samad Iraqi Food Restaurant: This popular spot is known for its delicious and authentic Iraqi meals, served in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The dishes are hearty, flavorful, and, most importantly, affordable.
Don’t Miss: Try the lamb kebabs or the biryani for a taste of true Iraqi cuisine.
- Al Habasha Restaurant: For Ethiopian food lovers, this restaurant is a must-visit. Known as one of the best Ethiopian restaurants in Dubai, it offers generous portions at wallet-friendly prices. The flavorful spices and authentic dishes make it a highlight for many travelers.
Don’t Miss: The injera with doro wat (spicy chicken stew) is a fan favorite.
- MyGovindas – Deira, Gold Souk: Hands down, this was my favorite restaurant of the trip! Specializing in Indian vegetarian cuisine, MyGovindas offers an incredible menu filled with bold flavors and perfectly spiced dishes. The staff were exceptionally friendly, making the experience even better.
Don’t Miss: Honestly, everything I tried was fantastic, but the paneer tikka masala and garlic naan were standouts. If you’re near the Gold Souk and craving a delicious, affordable meal, this is the place to be.

- Textile Souk: Located in Bur Dubai, this market is the place to shop for affordable fabrics, scarves, and souvenirs.
Tip: Bargaining is expected in the souks, so don’t be shy to negotiate for a better price!
