Where To Go In Montenegro

Where To Go In Montenegro

With its popularity growing every day, Montenegro is a stop you want to make in your Balkan itinerary. With the most popular cities being close to another, it’s easy to take your time and enjoy your trip in Montenegro. You won’t be rushing around trying to take your 11-hour night bus, trust me 😅 Here, you’ll find my opinion on where to go in the country.

Virpazar

You cannot go to Montenegro without exploring Lake Skadar. There’s a reason why boat cruising on Skadar is one of the most popular attractions in the country. That’s why you won’t have a choice but to visit Virpazar. This small town is where all the boat tours to explore the lake start. I recommend spending 1 day in Virpazar: half of the day exploring the town and the other half on the lake. To know more about this place, check out: 3 Of The Best Things To Do In Virpazar

Podgorica

Podgorica is Montenegro’s capital. However, it’s not a city that’s often recommended to visit. That is especially true if you have a short time in the country. Here’s why: there are not as many activities to do in Podgorica as in the other cities. Quite frankly, you won’t be amazed by what you can find in Podgorica compared to Kotor or Lake Skadar. If you don’t have a lot of days in Montenegro, I would skip the capital.

However, if you have the time to explore the country, I recommend spending 2 days in Podgorica. It won’t be the best place you see in the country, but it’s a nice stop to relax and enjoy your days. To know more about Podgorica, check out: 4 Of The Best Things To Do In Podgorica

Kotor

No need to sugarcoat what I have to tell you about Kotor: it’s amazing! Did you know that the Bay of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? My hostel was in the Old Town of Kotor. It’s one of the nicest towns I ever slept in while traveling. You have the impression of stepping back in medieval times. There are so many activities you can do. Honestly, just wandering in the streets was enough to make me happy. If you only have 3 days in Montenegro, go to Kotor. You won’t be disappointed.

Budva

Budva is the center of tourism in Montenegro. That means a lot of people and higher prices. This town is so popular because of its sand beaches and amazing nightlife. If you want to party in Montenegro, Budva is the place to go. Otherwise, if you want to go to Budva for the beaches, I recommend Stevi Stefan or Herceg Novi. I unfortunately didn’t go to these 2 cities. However, I heard they are a bit less crowded than Budva and the beaches are also very nice.
