Are you planning a trip to Portugal and wondering what cities to visit in the country? You’re on the right page! Here, you’ll find out about the different cities I’ve been to. I travelled from the country’s north all the way to the south. It did it 3 times! Everything I tell you, I have experienced and loved. Portugal is in my top 5 favorite destinations ever. I hope you will like it as much as I do!
- Lisbon – Great for historical activities, shopping and eating at well-known restaurants.
- Faro – Best place for calm and relaxing days.
- Lagos – Amazing for the water sports, sunrises and people.
- Albufeira – The best party place in the south of Portugal.
- Porto – The place to go for wine tasting.
- Aveiro – The Venice of Portugal.
- Évora – Best place for skydiving and authentic Portuguese vibes.
Lisbon
You can’t go to Portugal without visiting the Portuguese capital. You should spend at least 2 full days in Lisbon and 1 full day Sintra. I don’t like big cities, but Lisbon has a charm I loooove. Be aware that you will walk up and down a lot because Lisbon is a hilly city.
- You will most likely land at Lisbon’s airport since it is the biggest city in Portugal. Good news: you can take the metro from the airport to almost anywhere in the city. It is suuuuper easy.
- Sintra is a must if you have an extra day in Lisbon. It’s a historical village 45 minutes away from Lisbon. Definitely the day I look forward to when I go to Lisbon.
- Lisbon is the city with the most historical activities: museums, Belém Tower, Augusta Street, São Jorge Castle… Check out 6 Of The Best Things To Do In Lisbon.
- Lisbon is filled with cobbled streets & well-known restaurants.
- Tram 28 is a classic to do in Lisbon!
Faro
One of the calmest cities in Portugal. It’s not because it’s calm that it is boring. I recommend 1-2 full days in Faro.
- You might land at Faro’s airport since it is the only airport in the south of Portugal.
- From the center of Faro, you can take a boat to the beach. The sand is beautiful and, even in December, the water is hot enough to swim.
- The main street is filled with markets and boutiques!
- You can walk everywhere since it is such a small city.
- More calm and relaxed atmosphere than most cities in Portugal.
Lagos
The nicest activities I did in Portugal were in Lagos. The people were sooo nice! I would definitely recommend spending 2–3 full days.
- The beaches are very nice.
- You can do kayak, paddleboard, boat rides, and snorkeling.
- There is a marina with a lot of restaurants.
- Nice bars to spend the night at: Beer&Co Lagos and Amuras Bar are my favorite.
- Watch an incredible sunrise at Miradouro da Ponta da Piedade viewpoint.
- The center of town is filled with markets, boutiques and cobbled streets.
Albufeira
The place to go for nightlife and parties in the south of Portugal.
- There are a couple of good restaurants. If you like meat, you will fall in love with this place: Sabores do Churrasco Premium.
- Honestly, I stayed in Lagos instead of Albufeira because everything except for the nightlife is better there. It’s a 45 minutes drive so I went to spend the evening in Albufeira but went back to my Airbnb in Lagos. So many people told me to party at Albufeira. I did it. I loved it. Don’t miss it!
*PS : Most of the restaurants/bars in Albufeira take cash only !!
Porto
Everyone knows you go to Porto for the wine. There’s so much more to see! Be ready because Porto is also a hilly city and let me tell you, you’re going to sweat in the summer! I would recommend spending at least 2 full days in Porto.
- Wine !!! That’s enough for you to go.
- You might land at Porto’s airport since it is the only airport in the north of Portugal.
- Walking in the Ribeira district is very nice. It’s close to the water. There are a lot of boutiques and restaurants.
- Lots of historical activities such as: Luis Bridge, Bolsa Palace, Porto Cathedral, Porto Museum – Casa do Infante…
- Porto is a big city but luckily, there are a lot of green spaces such as: Parque de Serralves, Crystal Palace Gardens…
Aveiro
Such a nice little city. 1 full day is enough to see everything.
- The Venice of Portugal.
- You can take the bus to go to the beach.
- There are also a lot of markets and boutiques with really nice cobbled streets.
Évora
My favorite low-key city in Portugal. I fell in love with the gardens in the Cathedral. I recommend 1 full day in Évora.
- For me, Évora is the most charming and authentic Portuguese city.
- You can do all your activities on foot: Roman temple, Public garden, Cathedral of évora, Aqueduct, Capella dos Ossos…
- The safest city to go skydiving in Portugal.
