Where To Go In Vietnam

Where To Go In Vietnam

Vietnam holds a special space in my heart. I didn’t know what to expect since I heard controversial opinions about this Asian country. Yet, let me tell you how much fun I had during my time there! From the beaches to the mountains, Vietnam has something for everyone. Being one of the cheapest countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam offers the flexibility to explore either through budget backpacking or luxury experiences. So, here is a guide to all the cities I visited and why you must see them too:

Hanoi

Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam. It’s known for its bustling markets where shops sell everything from silk clothes (my favorite silk top is from Hanoi) to street food and its vibrant street life. The Old Quarter is a must when visiting Hanoi. Honestly, you can’t say you visited Vietnam without seeing this captivating city. It offers a diversity of Vietnam’s rich heritage and dynamic present.

One activity you mustn’t miss when visiting the city is Hanoi Train Street. As you can see in the video, a train passes so close to you while you enjoy a drink in a restaurant/café. It’s such a nice and different activity!

I recommend spending a minimum of 2 full days in Hanoi. Don’t forget to check out 6 Of The Best Things To Do In Hanoi, Vietnam to know more.

Ha Giang Loop

The Ha Giang Loop is a breathtaking motorbike journey through the remote landscapes of Ha Giang province in northern Vietnam. You will have the chance to see limestone mountains, rice fields, winding rivers, traditional hill tribe villages, immerse yourself in local culture and so much more. The loop typically begins and ends in the provincial capital of Ha Giang City. However, I heard that if you book through a hostel, you will most likely start from Hanoi. The route covers a distance of 300–400 kilometers, depending on the side trips taken along the way. You can either drive your motorbike (which I heard is very difficult because of the roads) or have an experienced driver with you. The Ha Giang Loop is the perfect activity if you are looking for an unforgettable scooter adventure for a couple of days.

My biggest regret in Vietnam is not having the time to do the Ha Giang Loop. I heard such good things from friends who did it. Unfortunately, I don’t have a company to recommend. However, I highly recommend checking TikTok videos about the Ha Giang Loop to know which company is recommended by backpackers. You can also book in advance online or at most hostels close to Ha Giang province.

Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northeastern Vietnam. There’s a reason it’s one of the country’s most iconic natural attractions. Hạ Long Bay is renowned for its breathtaking scenery of emerald-green waters dotted with 1,600 limestone islands that are unlike anywhere else on Earth.

You can either explore Ha Long Bay on a day trip from some cities like Hanoï or sleep overnight on a boat cruise. We decided only to do a day trip and it was an awesome day! However, I heard great things about the 2 options, it only depends on your budget and time in Vietnam. Your day will depend on the company you choose. Most likely, you will either watch the sunrise or the sunset, stop at Ti Top Island (pristine sandy beaches), explore Sung Sot Cave (stunning stalactites and stalagmites), and/or do some kayaking while watching monkeys.

It’s important to ask the company while booking what their activities are. You can either book online or through your hotel/hostel. We booked through our hotel, JW Marriott Hotel, for 3 people. We spent our day on a catamaran, all of your meals except for breakfast were included as well as the transportation from the hotel. Hue

Located in central Vietnam, Hue was the imperial capital of Vietnam, from 1802 to 1945, during the Nguyen Dynasty. That’s why this smaller city is rich in historical and cultural landmarks. No need to say that the most popular attraction is the Imperial City.

It’s a vast complex of palaces, temples, and administrative buildings surrounded by fortified walls. If you are looking to learn more about Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage and imperial legacy, this city is for you.

I recommend spending a minimum of 2 days in Hue. Don’t forget to check out 6 Of The Best Things To Do In Hue, Vietnam to know more.

Ho-Chi-Minh-City (Saigon)

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam. I kid you not when I say the streets are filled with motorcycles (as you can see in the video). This city is also known for its historic landmarks, diverse culinary restaurants, and vibrant energy.

I love Ho-Chi-Minh-City because it’s always busy so you will never get bored! There are plenty of activities to do. Here are my favorite ones:

  • The War Remnants Museum: a great way to learn more about Vietnam’s tumultuous past.
  • The Ben Thanh Market: perfect for shopping and street food.
  • The Café Apartments: I had the best poke bowl of my life at Poke Saigon.

I recommend spending a minimum of 3 nights in this city. Check out 7 Of The Best Things To Do In Ho-Chi-Minh-City, Vietnam to learn more about this city!

Phú Quốc

Asia’s turquoise water is often associated with the Philippines and Thailand. Lucky for us, Vietnam also has white beaches and blue waters: Phú Quốc. This small island is located in the Gulf of Thailand. Although it may be less impressive than some beaches in other Asia countries, this island is a lovely addition to your Vietnam itinerary. I’m so happy my family and I decided to go there.

Here are some of my favorite activities we did in Phú Quốc:

  • Enjoy the beaches.
  • Visit the Aquatopia Water Park by taking a cable car.
  • Explore Phú Quốc night market.

I recommend spending a minimum of 3 nights on the island. Don’t forget to check out 5 Of The Best Things To Do In Phu Quoc, Vietnam to know more.
