Kuta is often one of the first places travelers experience when arriving in Bali. Known for its busy streets, affordable prices, beginner surf culture, and lively atmosphere, Kuta tends to divide opinions : you either love it or hate it.
Personally, we actually enjoyed our time there.
Would we spend an entire week in Kuta? Probably not. But we do think it’s worth visiting for a day or two, especially if you’re:
- Recovering from jet lag
- Traveling on a budget
- Looking for affordable shopping and surf lessons
- Wanting a more energetic side of Bali
Kuta is also one of the easiest places to settle into Bali life before exploring quieter areas like Ubud, Seminyak, or Nusa Dua.

One of the best things to do in Kuta is shopping! Especially if you forgot half your suitcase like I did.
Kuta is filled with:
- Souvenir shops
- Surf stores
- Market stalls
- Small trendy boutiques
You’ll find everything from:
- Sunglasses
- Flip-flops
- Beachwear
- Trendy clothing
- Phone chargers
- Bags and jewelry
Negotiating Tips
Negotiating is completely normal in Bali, especially in smaller shops and markets.
The first price is usually higher than what sellers expect to receive, so don’t be afraid to politely negotiate. Keep it friendly and respectful, Balinese people are incredibly kind, and bargaining is part of the experience.
Kuta Art Market
Kuta Art Market is one of the most popular places to shop for affordable souvenirs and clothing in Kuta. It’s a great place to find:
- Handmade souvenirs
- Bali-themed gifts
- Lightweight clothing
- Bags and accessories
- Local artwork
This is where we bought most of our clothing, including these black and white pants!
Prices are usually negotiable, especially if you purchase multiple items from the same vendor.

Jalan Tegal Wangi
Jalan Tegal Wangi became one of our favorite shopping streets in Kuta. The street is lined with small boutiques, local shops, surf stores, and trendy clothing stores.
It’s a great area to casually walk around and browse while exploring Kuta. You’ll find:
- Linen clothing
- Beachwear
- Handmade jewelry
- Crochet items
- Bags and sandals
- Trendy Bali-style fashion
Most shops open later in the morning and stay open into the evening.

Beachwalk Shopping Center
If you prefer a more modern shopping experience, Beachwalk Shopping Center is one of the best malls in Kuta. Located right across from Kuta Beach, it offers:

- Beauty stores
- Surf shops
- Clothing boutiques
It’s also a great place to escape the afternoon heat for a bit.

Discovery Shopping Mall
Another popular shopping destination in Kuta is Discovery Shopping Mall. It’s located near Waterbom Bali and offers a mix of local and international stores.
You’ll find:

- Beauty and skincare shops
The mall also has a beachfront walkway with ocean views.

Spend Time at Kuta Beach
Kuta Beach is known for it’s long, wide, stretch of sand where liveliness is more present than peacefulness.
While it may not be the most breathtaking beach on the island, it has a fun, energetic vibe that makes it worth experiencing at least once.
Expect:
- Surf schools everywhere
- Beach vendors
- Sunset crowds
- A lively atmosphere all day long
We personally wouldn’t spend an entire relaxing beach day here, but it’s perfect for:
- Walking along the shore
- Watching surfers
- Taking a surf lesson
- Catching the sunset
About the Trash Situation
When we visited during the rainy season, there was quite a bit of debris on the beach and in the water.
Locals explained that Bali experiences what’s often called “trash season,” when ocean currents and winds bring waste toward certain beaches, especially around Kuta.
Outside of this period, the beach is usually much cleaner.

Take a Surf Lesson
Kuta is one of the best places in Bali to learn surfing.
The waves are generally beginner-friendly, and there are countless surf schools directly on the beach.
What to expect:
- Affordable lessons
- Board rental included
- Friendly local instructors
- Beginner-friendly waves
We paid around 250k IDR for a 2-hour lesson, and honestly, it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.
Even if you’ve never surfed before, most instructors make it really approachable and fun.

Watch the Sunset at the Beach
This might sound simple, but watching the sunset in Kuta is genuinely one of the best free things to do.
Around sunset, the beach completely changes atmosphere:
- Music starts playing
- People gather along the shore
- Surfers catch their final waves of the day
Grab a drink, sit on the sand, and enjoy the view, it’s one of those classic Bali moments.

Try the Food Scene in Kuta
Kuta has a surprisingly good mix of:
- Cheap local warungs
- Trendy cafés
- International restaurants
One of my favorite spots was Beach Bowl Bali.
Jézabel’s Note: As a pescetarian, I was honestly impressed by their vegetarian and plant-based options. Their Caesar salad with plant-based chicken was one of my favorite meals in Bali.

If you’re looking for a fun activity beyond the beach, visiting Waterbom Bali is a great option.
Often ranked as one of the best waterparks in Asia, it features:
- Water slides
- Lazy rivers

- Family-friendly attractions
It’s especially worth considering if you’re traveling with friends or family, need a break from the heat or want something different from beaches and temples.

Use Kuta as a Base to Explore Bali
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Kuta is its location.
From here, you can easily reach:
- Seminyak → beach clubs & restaurants
- Ubud → rice terraces & waterfalls
- Nusa Dua → calmer beaches & resorts
Kuta is also one of the more affordable areas in Bali, making it a practical base for budget travelers.
My Honest Opinion on Kuta
Kuta definitely isn’t Bali’s most peaceful or picturesque destination, but we still think it has its place in a Bali itinerary.
It’s:
- Affordable
- Convenient
- Beginner-friendly
- Full of energy
Would we choose Kuta over Uluwatu or Ubud? Personally, no.
But for:
- Jet lag recovery
- First-time Bali visitors
- Budget travel
- Beginner surfing
…it’s honestly a solid option.
