Surfing in San Juan del Sur

Surfing is the heartbeat of San Juan del Sur. While the bay in town is calm and not ideal for waves, nearby beaches are world-class surf spots.

Depending on if you prefer renting a board and going by yourself or booking a class with a surfing company, you’ll find here information about the different beaches and our personal experience with a surfing company that we do recommend!

The most popular beaches in San Juan del Sur

  • Playa Maderas: Just 20 minutes north of town, this is the most popular surfing beach & is great for beginners and intermediate surfers.

  • Playa Remanso: A smaller bay south of town, perfect for beginner surfers.

  • Playa Hermosa: A wide sandy beach, great for both surfing and relaxing.

Transportation to the different beaches: You can find all the information you need about the shuttles at casaorogroup.com. Prices are around 7-12$ USD, per person, for a round trip.

Surfing Class in San Juan del Sur!

If like most travelers you don’t consider yourself a surfing pro, I highly suggest you book a surfing class.

There are many companies you can book through but we have a recommendation for you that you shouldn’t miss out on!

We recommend you to book through La Chica au Nica.

La Chica is owned by a Québecoise now living in San Juan del Sur, she has the best connections to help you book your activities and ensure a fun & safe vacation.

The surfing company she works with is Tribu Surf. They pick you up at your accommodation and bring you to the beach they picked for the day. In fact, they professionally select the time and beach based on waves and tide conditions 48 hours before the surf lesson.

For the pricing, there is more than an option:

  1. Individual Surfer: You will join a group lesson for the price of $35 USD.
  2. Semi-Private Lesson: Perfect for duos, you and your partner will have an instructor for yourselves at $45 USD per person.
  3. Private Session: Intensive lesson, you and your instructor only for an adapted class at $65 USD per person.

Each options include:

  • A surf board properly chosen for you level
  • Round-trip transportation from San Juan del Sur to the chosen beach
  • Personalized coaching for 1h30

Now you’re ready to have fun surfing in Nicaragua!

2

Hike to Cristo de la Misericordia

Overlooking San Juan del Sur Bay is Cristo de la Misericordia, one of the tallest Christ statues in the world.

Entrance fee: $2 USD for foreigners, $1 USD for locals

Hiking to the top

You can hike your way up which makes it a fun physical activity with rewarding views.

The only way is through the beach since there’s a river crossing the city that would make you do a huge detour if you were to follow the road.

Directions to walk/hike to Cristo de la Misericordia:

1. Walk along the beach, Playa San Juan del Sur, in the direction of the statue. Keep going even when you’ve passed by all the bars and restaurants.

2. At one point you’ll have to cross the river. When you do, start paying a bit more attention to find the path you have to take next.

3. You can find it on Google Maps : Path Off Of Beach. If you don’t have access to it, look for a space between two houses that resembles a drain.

4. You will exit on the road you need to follow. Turn left, still moving towards the statue.

5. You walk on that same road until you have to cross a “Pacific Marlin” gate. Do not worry, it’s not trespassing.

6. At one point, the hill will flatten and you will see a gate on the left and a Pacific Marlin sign on the right. Cross the gate on the left.

7. You’re going to reach a fork on the road. The unpaved way is a dead end but it does offer a nice view. Instead keep going straight on the paved road.

8. When you see a staircase, you made it!

Hiking/walking time: From the river, it takes about 30 minutes to get to the top. Depending on how far on the beach you are, it can take up to 15 minutes more for a total of 45 minutes.

Take a taxi to the top

Taking a taxi to the top is also an option. It makes the duration of the activity much smaller and is a great option for people with limited physical conditions.

Important: Taxis will take you up to the gate I mention in point 6 of the directions. Which means you still have a little way to go by walking. If you have strong limitations this is something to consider.

3

Zip-lining at Parque de Adventura

If you’re looking for an adventure that takes you off the beach and into the treetops, ziplining at Parque de Aventura is one of the best things to do in San Juan del Sur. It’s the kind of activity that makes you feel like a kid again, equal parts thrilling and breathtaking.

The park is set high in the hills above town, which means you not only get the adrenaline rush of zipping through the jungle canopy, but also sweeping views of San Juan del Sur Bay and the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Costa Rica.

What the Experience is Like

  • The park features 17 zip lines, stretching over 2.5 kilometers of cable.
  • Lines vary in length and speed, so you’ll get a mix of short, quick rides and long stretches where you can really soak in the views.
  • One of the highlights is the Tarzan swing, where you leap off a platform and swing through the forest like, you guessed it, Tarzan.
  • The guides are friendly, professional, and always ready with a joke to calm nerves if it’s your first time ziplining.

The whole activity takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the size of your group.

Price & Practical Info

  • Cost: Between $35 & $49 USD per person depending on the package you choose.
  • Duration: 2 hours from start to finish, including safety briefing.
  • What to wear: Closed-toe shoes, comfortable clothes, and don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • How to get there: The park is about a 15-minute drive from San Juan del Sur. Most operators include transport, but you can also arrange a taxi.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It

Ziplining here isn’t just about the thrill, it’s about the setting. You’ll soar over lush jungle, spot monkeys and tropical birds, and enjoy some of the best panoramic views in all of San Juan del Sur. It’s a perfect break from the beach, and it’s fun for both adrenaline junkies and families (kids as young as 3 can usually join).

You can also book this activity through La Chica au Nica!

If you want to experience San Juan del Sur from a whole new perspective, a catamaran cruise with Nica Sail is hands down one of the best activities you can do here. It’s the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and those “I can’t believe this is real” moments that make travel so special.

What to Expect

Nica Sail runs half-day trips that usually start around 1:00 PM and return just after sunset. Once you leave the bay, the crew sails north along the rugged coastline, where dramatic cliffs meet untouched beaches. The highlight is dropping anchor at a secluded bay, the perfect spot to swim, snorkel, or simply float with a cold drink in hand.

Onboard, you’ll enjoy:

  • Open bar with unlimited national seltzers, rhum & beer, and non-alcoholic options.
  • Fresh snacks like fresh ceviche, guacamole, cheese dip, veggies and chips.
  • A relaxed but fun atmosphere with great music and friendly staff.
  • The chance to spot dolphins, turtles, or even whales during migration season.

As the boat sails back toward San Juan del Sur, you’ll be treated to one of the town’s legendary sunsets from the deck, a golden glow over the Pacific with the Christ of the Mercy statue in the distance. It’s pure magic.

Price & Practical Info

  • Cost: Around $80 USD per person (includes open bar, snacks, and snorkeling gear).
  • Duration: About 4.5 hours (from 1:00 PM until sunset).
  • What to bring: Swimsuit, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, and a dry bag if you want to keep your phone or camera safe.
  • Booking: We highly suggest you book through La Chica au Nica for her incredible customer service.

Party at Sunday Funday in San Juan del Sur

If you’ve heard anything about San Juan del Sur, chances are you’ve heard of Sunday Funday. This legendary pool crawl is one of the most famous backpacker parties in Central America. Whether you love it or hate it, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

What Is Sunday Funday?

Every Sunday, travelers and locals alike gather for a day-long pool party crawl that moves between some of the town’s most popular hostels and bars. It kicks off in the afternoon and doesn’t slow down until late at night.

Expect DJs, dancing, drinking games, inflatable pool toys, and hundreds of people from all over the world ready to let loose.

It’s not just a party, it’s a San Juan del Sur institution. For many backpackers, it’s a rite of passage while traveling through Nicaragua.

Schedule & Venues

The exact venues can vary, but Sunday Funday usually looks like:

  • Start at Pachamama Hostel: Everyone drinks FREE from 1-2PM
  • 2nd & 3rd stops vary between: Social, Anamar, Naked Tiger, The Space and Rancho #3
  • Finish at Arribas Bar (downtown nightlife to close it out)

The party typically starts around 1:00 PM and goes until midnight or later. Buses are provided to shuttle people up to the hillside hostels and back into town, so you don’t have to worry about transport.

Price & Tickets

  • General admission: About $35-40 USD per person.
  • Includes a Sunday Funday tank top (basically your ticket + a souvenir).
  • You can purchase your tickets online at sundayfundaynicaragua.com.

What to Bring

  • Swimsuit and flip-flops (you’ll get wet).
  • Cash for drinks and food.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses (the Nicaraguan sun is no joke).
  • A waterproof pouch or leave valuables at your hostel. Phones and wallets don’t always mix well with pool parties.

Is Sunday Funday Worth It?

If you love social events and wild parties, absolutely. Sunday Funday is loud, messy, and unforgettable. It’s the perfect chance to meet fellow travelers, dance until sunset, and get a taste of San Juan del Sur’s famous nightlife.

If wild parties aren’t your style, you might want to skip it and enjoy a quiet sunset on the beach instead. Still, it’s one of those travel stories you’ll be telling long after you leave Nicaragua.

Want to experience Sunday Funday without paying full price?

Good news: it’s totally possible. You can start at Pachamama, which is free to enter until around 4–4:30 PM, and soak up the early party vibes without spending a dime. Then, skip the middle bars and head straight to Arribas for the final stop around 8:30 PM. Entry there usually costs only $10–15 USD, and you’ll still catch the peak energy of the night.

My tip: Pace yourself! The party lasts all day, and it’s easy to burn out early. Alternate between water and drinks, and don’t forget to eat something along the way.
