1
Faire le tour complet de l'île à pied ou à vélo
L’un des villages our favorite ways to experience Gili Trawangan is by walking or cycling around the entire island.
Le island’s circumference is approximately 6,5 kilometers (4 miles) making it possible to complete the walk in about 2 to 3 hours depending on how often you stop.
If you decide to go by bike, it could take about an hour, again, depending on how often you stop.
Along the way you’ll discover quiet beaches, beach bars, scenic viewpoints, snorkeling spots, and some of the island’s most beautiful stretches of coastline.
For the best experience, start early in the morning before temperatures rise or head out in the late afternoon to catch sunset along the west coast.
Unlike many tropical destinations where transportation is necessary, Gili Trawangan is small enough that walking often becomes one of the most enjoyable activities on the island.
2
Louer un vélo ou petit scooter électrique
One of the things that makes Gili Trawangan so unique is the absence of traditional cars and motorbikes. The island has maintained its laid-back atmosphere by relying primarily on bicycles, walking, horse-drawn carts, and more recently, small electric scooters.
Bicycle rentals are available all over the island, especially near the harbor, and remain the most popular way to get around.
Typical bicycle rental prices:
- 50,000-75,000 IDR per day (around $3,80-5,80 CAD)
- Discounts are often available for multi-day rentals
If you’d prefer a little extra help, many rental shops now offer electric scooters and electric bikes. These are quiet, environmentally friendly, and ideal for travelers who don’t want to pedal in the tropical heat.
Typical electric scooter rental prices:
- Approximately 100,000-150,000 IDR per day (around $7,60-11,60 CAD)
- Prices vary depending on the model and rental duration
Horse-drawn carriages (cidomos)
Please Note: While horse-drawn carriages (cidomos) are one of Gili Trawangan’s traditional modes of transportation, we do not recommend using them.
Although reports from local organizations and visitors suggest that concerns about horse welfare have decreased in recent years compared to the past, animal welfare issues remain a topic of ongoing concern.
Choosing to walk, rent a bicycle, or use an electric bike is a more ethical and environmentally friendly way to explore the island while supporting more sustainable tourism.
Having your own transportation makes it easy to explore the island’s beaches, sunset viewpoints, restaurants, and quieter corners at your own pace.
Since Gili Trawangan is relatively flat and only about 7 kilometers around, getting from one side of the island to the other is quick and easy.
3
Faire le tour des îles Gili
One of the biggest advantages of staying on Gili Trawangan is how easy it is to visit neighboring islands.
The three Gili Islands each have their own personality:
- Gili Trawangan: nightlife and social atmosphere
- Gili Air : relaxed balance between social and peaceful
- Gili Meno : quiet, romantic, and secluded
Public boats and snorkeling tours connect all three islands.

Many travelers choose to visit all three during a single day.

Swim With Sea Turtles on Gili Trawangan
One of the most memorable experiences on Gili Trawangan is seeing sea turtles in their natural habitat.
One of the things we loved most about Gili Trawangan is that you don’t necessarily need to book a tour to see turtles. Many travelers spot them directly from shore, making it possible to enjoy an incredible wildlife experience on a budget.
The northeast side of the island, commonly called Turtle Point, is one of the best places to see them.
If you don’t have your own snorkeling equipment, don’t worry, it’s very easy to rent everything you need near Turtle Point and around the main harbor area.
Rental prices are typically around 50,000 IDR ($3-4 CAD) for the entire day, making it one of the most affordable activities on the island.
Most rental shops offer:
- A mask
- A snorkel
- Fins or water shoes (fins are recommended, as sea turtles can swim surprisingly fast!)
- GoPro rentals for underwater photos and videos (extra $)
Don’t forget!
When swimming near turtles:
- Never touch them
- Avoid blocking their path
- Maintain a respectful distance
Responsible wildlife encounters help protect these incredible animals for future generations.
That said, joining a snorkeling excursion around the Gili Islands can still be a fantastic option.
Benefits of booking a snorkeling tour include:
- Visiting multiple snorkeling locations in one day
- Boat transportation between sites
- Access to reefs farther from shore
- Opportunities to see more marine life
- A relaxing boat ride around the islands
If you’re only planning to snorkel once during your stay, a tour is usually the best way to experience the highlights of all three Gili Islands.

Le famous ocean swings have become one of the most photographed attractions on Gili Trawangan.
Located primarily on the island’s west coast, these swings sit directly in the shallow water and provide incredible photo opportunities, particularly during sunset.
Many visitors arrive about an hour before sunset when the lighting is ideal.
Even if photography isn’t your priority, the sunset side of the island is worth visiting for its relaxed atmosphere, beachfront restaurants, and incredible ocean views.

Regarder un film sur la plage
Looking for a unique way to end your day on Gili Trawangan? Watching a movie under the stars is one of the island’s most relaxing evening activities.
Our favorite spot is Aston Sunset Beach Resort, located on the island’s quieter west coast. Every evening, the resort transforms its beachfront into an open-air cinema with a giant screen set just a few steps from the ocean. Sink into a bean bag, listen to the waves, and enjoy a movie while the stars appear overhead.
One of the best parts? Entry is completely free. There’s no ticket required, although it’s expected that you’ll order a drink, dessert, or dinner while you watch. Waitstaff will come directly to your bean bag, making it easy to enjoy cocktails, fresh juices, popcorn, or a full meal without ever leaving your seat.
Movies typically begin around 7:30 PM, once it’s dark enough, with a second screening often starting around 9:00 PM. The schedule changes daily and usually includes a mix of recent blockbusters, family-friendly favorites, and timeless classics.
For the best experience, arrive 20 to 30 minutes before the first movie to grab one of the front-row bean bags. Even if you’re not staying at the resort, everyone is welcome to join.

South Beach
- A lively area close to restaurants, bars, and beach clubs.
