Granada is located about 1 to 1.5 hours from Managua, depending on traffic.
Your main options are:

- Best for: Comfort, groups, late arrivals

- Look for buses labeled “Granada”
- Expect basic conditions and limited luggage space (They might charge a tiny fee for big luggage, around a dollar)

Best Way to Get Around Granada
Granada’s charm is best experienced slowly. Most attractions are close together, and transportation within the city is simple.
- Walking: Granada is flat, colorful, very walkable during the day and it’s free!
- Taxis: Typical cost within the city is ~40-80 NIO ($1.50-3 CAD) per ride. An important thing to know is that taxis do not use meters and you should always confirm the price before getting in.
- Tuk-Tuks / Moto-Taxis: Common for short distances, they cost ~30-60 NIO ($1-2.50 CAD).
- Uber Alternative = inDrive: Granada does not have Uber, but inDrive is the best and most widely used alternative. It works very differently from Uber. You enter your destination, the app suggests a fare, you can lower or adjust the price, drivers send offers, and you choose the driver. Typical prices in Granada are ~40-70 NIO ($1.50-3 CAD) for short rides & ~80-150 NIO ($3-6 CAD) for longer rides.
- Scooter & Bicycle Rentals: Available at hotels, hostels, and rental shops, scooter rentals are ~400-700 NIO/day ($15-25 CAD) and bicycle rentals are ~150-250 NIO/day ($6-9 CAD).
- Horse-Drawn Carriages: While commonly offered to tourists, we strongly discourage this option for ethical and animal welfare reasons.

Most of Granada’s main attractions can be done in 1-2 full days, making it an easy and worthwhile stop on a larger Nicaragua itinerary. Important: Make sure to arrive before 5PM as they almost didn’t let us in when we arrived at 5:02PM…

Las Isletas are a group of hundreds of small volcanic islands located just outside Granada, formed by an ancient eruption of Mombacho Volcano.
Duration: 2–3 hours
Why it’s worth it: Calm waters, wildlife, and unique lake scenery. One of Granada’s signature experiences.
